Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I am hoping my blue copper doesn't have any wheaten in his blood line. Love the color but aiming for Splash or black copper. I hope the eggs hatch though
Black birds hatching out of a blue copper mating are NOT black copper Marans. They are blue-bred blacks and are not for a BCM breeding program, but fine to use in a blue copper pen. What color birds what your blue copper mated to?

I am worried about the collar also, but I figured I would give it a try, if he is a constant crower like my CCL. I live in Chicago, so my little flock has only my yard to free range in where I can keep a close eye on him. If it seems to be causing any kind of distress, I will remove it. I am home all day, taking care of my sister and babysitting the grandkids and we spend a lot of time with the chickens. But, I figured, I could at least try it, and if it doesn't work, at least I tried to let him have some kind of life other than taking him to a butcher and putting him on the table for dinner.

I ordered eggs and hatched these 2. I have a small brinsea that I was using and can only do small hatches. Ihilani Coffe, I followed the advice on hatching you gave me a while back, and it worked nicely, Thank You! And I know they are not Black Copper Marans, but I wanted a pullet and cockerel. Not to breed them, but to cross the cockerel BBM with my CCLs for a couple of Olive eggers. I wanted the BBM hen to lay some darker eggs for my colorful basket. I just want to have some decent pure breeds to call my own and produce some healthy eggs for my family.

Also the pic I posted was from 2 weeks ago. Here are more current pics. The black one has coloring coming in on wings and neck.

Both look like pullets. I have chicks around the same age and the cockerels are extremely obvious. Their combs and wattles are very red and large.

The black one has color coming in on his wings and neck, so I am sticking to cockerel. He was very small at hatch compared to the blue, so maybe he is just late developer, but he is catching up.

It will be a while before I can use it. My pair is only 8 weeks old, but I will let you know.

Oh man..seeing these photos, tells me that I more than likely have two boys out there. They are only a few weeks old. One is a beautiful splash! Well, I just hatched three more, will see if I get a girl.
