Can anyone tell me what kind of Maran this is? Thanks!

Hello! I'm new to the French Black Copper Marans. I have a rooster that I hatched from an egg. He started out with feathers on toes/shanks, but as he's aged, maybe 4 months now, his feathers are only on his legs now and its very light. Is he worthy to breed if he meets the other standards? Not sure what to do, if I should find a new rooster. I have some hens from a different breeder who have feather outer toes, and I noticed in the breeders picture, their dad has feathered middle toes but my females do not. I'd appreciate some advice as I don't want to waste time on him if he's not worth it. Thanks!

4 months is too young to make a judgment on whether or not he is worthy of breeding. A lot can change, they don't really mature until a year old or more. Lightly feathered toes/shanks can be worked with when used over hens with more feathering. Middle toe feathers are considered a fault only. More important is type, type, and type!

I have two Marans that I purchased about 2 weeks ago. They are 7 weeks 2 days old. I am pretty certain they are both pullets. When I picked them out from amongst their brothers, I thought I was picking two Black or Black Copper Marans. I am wondering if one might be a Blue Copper Maran. It is noticeably lighter than the Black one. The lighter one also has copper flecks starting to show up around the neck area. Any insight/opinions are welcomed. I compared the lighter one to Blue Coppers online and it looks darker than those but lighter than the Black one I have. I would be thrilled if she is a Blue Copper. I am new to this breed. Thank you!

Hi MedSchlFarmers, I have a French Blue Copper Marans rooster and French Blue Copper Marans hens. The pullets got lighter as they got older. I have included some photos for you to compare color. I've taken many photos of my chickens and I find these photos accurately reflect the coloring of their feathers. Hope they help.

Totally unexpectedly, one of my Blue CM hens went broody almost 3 weeks ago-

!!. Having only hatched chicks via incubator before and in our excitement not thinking forward, we allowed her to collect eggs day by day over the course of a week, instead of using dummy eggs and putting a clutch under her all at one time. Hind site is 20/20, as the saying goes.
She now has some chicks that are due to hatch early next week and all the way through the following week. We are wondering if she will remain setting on the other eggs after the first chicks hatch for the remainder of time until all the eggs hatch? I would appreciate your opinions if you have had similar personal experience. We are thinking we should probably just fire up the incubator in a few days, just in case.

On another note, what are any of your experiences with French Blue CM as mothers? I don't want to go in and find that she hurt any hatchlings.

Thanks for your guidance.

You might want to fire up the bator when hatching starts, just in case. She may move off the nest a day after the first one hatches, and humidity will need to be high during hatch. Watch her during hatch! They will leave the nest to tend to the ones that hatched, to make sure they get food and water. You might be able to add back the babies that hatch within a few days, but that depends on the hen.
