Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I bought Marans two are pellets, one rooster. So he was in with the Marans at the feed store. I'm not sure what I have here. He is much smaller then the hens, looks like he has boots on, can anyone tell me what he is. I'm going to list him for sale, but want to know what I have. Live in the city, can't have roosters. Thanks so much, Leean

Black cochin. If he is a lot smaller than your other chickens he may be a black cochin bantam.

My cuckoo hens are much darker but if her legs are pinkish white she is cuckoo marans. If she is clean legged she is probably hatchery stock of the english standard, not the french standard. The french standard that the APA recognizes here in the US calls for lightly feathered legs. She will still lay caramel colored to light brown eggs and plenty of them. Cuckoos of hatchery stock make great layers. The other hen in front is clean legged and may be a Marans cross but doesnt really look like a pure Marans of any color or standard. It is difficult to see the color of her legs clearly. She is mossy with lots of gold/copper leakage if she is a clean legged black copper marans. Black copper Marans have slate colored legs and some marans color varieties are white/pink legged. Never yellow or willow legged. She could have been a product of someones Olive Egger project (marans crossed with a blue egg layer or easter egger) or maybe a mixed breed. Should still make a lovely layer. :)

Yes both are straight combed and have the pinky white legs. It doesn't matter really what breed just curious, the lady I got Ee from let me trade out the two roos and these were closest to mine in age.
