Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Do all varieties of Marans lay dark eggs?  I am looking for a couple pullets to get some darker eggs from and wondering if some lay darker than others or if the average about the same.
I like the looks of the Black Copper, Wheaten, and Birch so curious about those eggs.

I've found the BCM (Black Copper Marans) lay the darkest, though these days my Golden Cuckoo pullets have the GCM girls beat right now. In any case, regardless of the variety you'll find Marans from a private breeder lays darker than the hatchery Marans.

I received beautiful dark Marans eggs (accidentally cooked mine) from Anthony Krueger (Tony) he's on FB the rare breed auction site. I think he may have chicks too he's awesome to deal w/ sent extras. When I order again it wil def be from him lmk if you need his contact info his prices r very reasonable IMO

Yes i like to know that information i am just starting in marans
What started me in the breed is a free chicken that was given to me. She was really unhealthy and thin. Went got her.
Ot toke a year to get up to where she is now. I am so pound of her. She was to wesk to stand up. And Oct. 17 eas the first egg she layed in the year i have had her.and yesterday was her second egg. The person i git her from stop feeding her
Cause she stop laying. She went in a molt on them and they didnt seem to understand chicken do that.. so thsts how i starter looking at this breed. But if saw her then you through she was dead. But now you would not ever know it was the same bird.

It cost the same too feed a great bird as it does to feed a cull. There is a lot of truth to "you get what you pay for." I did not pay Brian Parks any more for his chics than what I got off craigs list and they were all culls. Tom

I agree with that to a point. If your showing you want the best you can get. But most people do not show.
I for one of not show or do I want to.I am only Interested in the egg color in this breed. I only want one pen in this breed So went I buy Eggs to hatch I want the darkies eggs I can afford . But if I was to buy a rooster from one of the breeder. I want to know the color number the rooster came out of. Now this
Is were I would turn to show one that shows.ill ask them for a rooster out of there darkies egg. And it wasn't a baby but one that was around 4 months or oldr. That be something ask them to help me please pick the best I can get.a nd I would want 2. OK this is just what I am planning to do.Went my hatched get bigger. And I am going to sell all rooster out my hatch eggs.to pay for my 2 rooster I'm thinking just before spring to do this by then I know just what I have and what I need.

The chics I got off craigs list were posted as French Black Copper Marans. I payed $10 dollars a piece for day old chics and drove 6hrs round trip to pic them up. At six month they still had yellow legs. I got 9 chics and 8 of them were cockerels. They had white under their hackels and caranation combs, all kinds of DQ's. The lady I bought them from hinted that they were from a well known hatchery. I culled them all but the one hen. She lays a nice egg, but I will not bred her. I bought 8 more chics at $8 dollars a piece on craigs list and got 6 cockerels and two pullets, they were all way dark no copper in hackle and have not layed a egg yet at almost 7 months. I did all of this before I studied these threads. Now I hope I know more than I did six months ago. I have never shown birds or sold an egg. I'm only doing this because I'm having fun. We give all of my wife's eggs to the Senior Center and I have eaten all of my Marans pullet eggs. We have roasted several cockerel and the eat really good. TOM

I have never gotten eggs off Craigslist. But I do know that yellow legs is not a marans. I order mine from eBay.but I look at the clubs of the breed and ask Questions . That's how I got my marans eggs. There some in the clubs that sale eggs in eBay. And some that don't. In there clubs is how you get them.and find out about them and what they have.

Most of the show people are really nice, do tell you the truth I found. Even went you wish they didn't.by the way. I don't want to know if you eat your birds. I don't. My ideal of Dressing out a chicken is sale it and go to the store and buy it already dress out for me. My chicken are my Groceries
