Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Here is another view of the new roo where there is less sun when I took the pic.

... and because I'm hoping to eventually do wheatens... I'm hoping he has a little wheaten in him.

No, I don't see. . . The one on top has amazing copper color, the one on bottom is practically yellow. The one on top has better leg feathering. The one on top also has a better comb.

Maybe it's just me. . .

I agree, I like the first roo much better. He is a tad dark in the coppering, but I prefer that color over the yellow any day!

Gee wonder if I can get the two roos to get along?

I need to have some folks post pics of my first roos babies.

I don't know what the standard roo looks like that is 'FBCM' but I've seen everything between #1 and #2 and most folks have commented on #2 as being closer to standard?

Perhaps it truly just is personal preference.

I also agree my current roo (not the one in quarantine) has much better leg feathering.

I like your first cockerel more as well Mahonri, he may be a bit too dark (who am I to say though, honestly?

) but to me it looks like he has more color in the right places.

You could always keep both, one light boy and one dark boy, breed them to hens, then pick the "correctly" colored birds and breed their offspring to each other!

I have always liked the dark mahogany coppering myself. I have one roo that I have held back from culling that has very dark mahogany that I have hoped I could use in some way, he has a bad comb but I like him anyways. I only have one mossy girl so thinking maybe I can put her with him. Really, I just love his color. I wish they would make the standard for dark mahogany I think it is prettier than the plain copper.

AGENT ORANGE!!! Love the name!!

Mahonri, I agree with the others on here. I like your first roo better, too. (I'm kind of a newby at all this, but I think I'm developing a pretty good eye.)

To be honest I do not believe either one are good enough to breed unless you just want some Dark egg layers.

One of these days I'm going to get my roos rounded up to where I can get some good pics for you all to critique. I'm torn between three different roosters to use for breeding.

Right now I have one of the three in with my hens. I haven't separated out my hens yet, but maybe I'll ask for honest opinions on them, too. (Don't worry... I'm tougher'n nails. I can probably take whatever anyone dishes out.)

I recently ordered a new incubator.

It is due to be shipped tomorrow, so will probably be here the first of next week by Fedex. I'm in the process of saving my best marans eggs. I know which roo they will be out of, but it is kind of a crap shoot as to which hens they are out of. This first hatch will definitely be a gamble.

I intend to have my new coop and runs done soon, so that any subsequent hatches will be narrowed down to exactly which bird the eggs are from.

Does anyone here get eggs that qualify as a "9" on the marans scale? My pullets have given me a few "8's" but nothing I could call a "9"

I'd love to see your eggs you consider an 8.

It is pretty rare to come across such dark eggs. . .

As for 9's, never heard of such. I've got some eggs here from Wynette (I preserved them after they wouldn't hatch) that I'd consider an 8, who knows, maybe they're a 9, but they're SOO dark, and certainly my goal in egg color.

I need to get myself an egg color chart.
