Oh my! I can hear my Mom's words ringing in my ears with that one! "Make yourself unavailable, and the men will flock you!"

That is true...but it works in both directions....women flock to unavailable men too.

Maybe I am just strange, but it seems that the chicken social order is very much like ours. That is one of the reasons I enjoy watching the birds.

The only hen that I have who will squat constantly is a big ol light brahma in the layer pen named Pickles. Pickles squats whenever any male comes along but none will mate her. She is the sweetest thing but has a vision problem. She used to get lost when freeranging and won't perch with the others because she falls off the perch etc. Most of the other hens don't like her they act like she is the kid that stinks.

I can't figure out how to put pic here but if I accidently get it right-I want to know what these two girls are? Blue copper & blue cuckoo?

The first picture is an older pic taken over a year ago so that hen was pretty young in the pic. Neither one of these hens lay a dark egg-in fact they wouldn't even be considered brown eggs!

Here's a photo I took of two of my BCM eggs alongside a plain brown egg. I'm pretty happy with the color I'm getting. Where do I purchase a marans egg color chart?

I would guess blue copper on the first one but maybe a mix of something else as well? I say this due to the dark eyes and you say she doesn't even lay a brown egg. I hope someone more experienced can help you out lol.

The second pic of the blue hen, does she have white earlobes or is that just the pic ?

The first hen came in an order of marans chicks from a hatchery (suppose to have been all marans)-and the 2nd one came with a flock of cuckoo hens I got from a cuckoo marans breeder. Both of them lay a pale egg-not white but not dark brown either. Are blue hens supplose to have orange eyes too?

You are so right Walt! My pullets would be the "mean girls" from High School, and poor Pip would be the "nerd" with the pocket protector that all the bullies shoved in the locker!
