Throw him in a pen with a bunch of pullets where he is the only roo. I bet he starts to crowing. I had a retarded Light Sussex. He came out of the shell screeching instead of cheeping and he was born with a bald butt. He did manage to grow up and mature, except his tail feathers were curly on one side and straight on the other and he walked with his head cocked to the side, and by looks was most definately a roo but was in a pen with a dominant roo. He never crowed or tried to breed. I just thought it was because he was reatarded. I had someone come over to pick up some other hens and she saw Fred and fell in love. I told her he was retarded and he didn't crow or breed. She wanted him anyway because he reminded her of a retarded rat she used to have and she didn't want a crower or a breeder so that would be perfect. So, I gave her Fred. The very day he was at his new home he bred everything in sight and started crowing. She did keep him and he has since calmed down a bit but it is so true about the less dominant roo not crowing or even developing as quickly as the dominant one.

He is in a coop with 20 something chicks his age of diff breeds both pullets and roo mix. Till I pick out the best to keep.
On the color in wings that's what I kept thinking and saying. (to the wall)

Can we talk about this from a begginer point of view for a moment. I have my Blue Birchen Roo (that also carries gold) that I posted about 100 pages back.

2 Blue marans hens
1 Splash Marans hen
3BCM Hens

Can I really keep them all together? I thought I was going to have to keep the BCMs out and let him only breed with the B/S. What do you get from a combo of my Blue birchen roo and BCM hens? Anything disireable?

Hopefully the 'experts' on here will clarify for you. I meant that Black Copper, Blue Copper, and the Splash can be together (B/B/S breeding). I'm pretty sure you would keep your Blue Birchen separate. As far as dark egg color, I was told it is best to keep a black copper cock with the dark egg gene over my B/B/S hens to keep the egg color darkest. Again, hopefully all of the really knowledgeable people here will throw in their two cents!

i am far from a expert but its widely beleaved that breeding daughters back to origonal roo that came from a dark egg will mabe improve egg color in the offspring ,personaly i think you should not back breed more than 5 or 6 times ,,, at that point then bring in some fresh blood and also back breeding can lock in the trates or faults good or bad

Karen, one of the great things about blue is that you can keep them with your BCM!

That's good to know because I keep running out of pens & buying more. Pretty soon I am going to have to move out to the pasture..........LOL
