Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

No... Different subjects... But I always test mate the roos against some unusual hens.. One is positive for Birchen I know now and one has partridge and one has Golden Salmon (wild type or duckwing)... I know which hen carries what and I can now use them agianst roos to find out what they are carrying...

One of my hens carries both wild type and partridge... She comes to me honestly from a well known breeder for a long time... and the other carries birchen. the only way this stuff can come out is if the rooster has it too... I have yet to produce wheaton but I have a male positive for wheaton traits so I will be test mating these hens to see if they are carrying this as well...

It is important to note that my darkest layers have all these genes crammed in there.

Ok, phew! I was getting confused as to how you were getting all those different gene pairings out of the same two birds! All you have to do now is buy a mate for whatever the offspring turn out to be! Get crackin' on those new pens!

No I am not breeding other colors.. I will likely develop a line and sell it to a local hatchery... I am interested in the genetic process that is why I monkey around.. Strickly hobbyist here... I like the BCM.. that is it... I have to be very careful what rooster I put with them though!!! LOL... So far Charlie is the bomb...No wheaton, no birchen, no wild type, no partridge..... That is my roo... I know I need to work on another line for the male but I am having trouble coming up with a clean cockerel from these hens.. GO FIGURE!!!

Everyone else will be able to develop thier line in like 5 years.. It is likely to take me 15 at this rate!!!

interesting stuff,,,,Interesting stuff, I never gert anything different in the wheaten, I read somewhere that wheaten are the most recessive color and shouldn’t throw anything like a sport or a odd color … some of the hens I culled were a little to dark in the shoulders and wing covers and some of the ro I culled had some varying shades on red mahogany shoulders but nothing like a sport, I think im jealous

Yes but they aren't welsummers.. probably quiet... My birds are VERY quiet... and nice eggie color...This is off my darkest egg layers. All the benefits of a Wellie w/o the noise and flying about.
