Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Illia ~ I know how you feel! Right now I have 5 cockerels and 5 pullets. The lone hatch cockerel, Pip, is still the lowest bird on the totem pole! I opened up the chicklet run today to let them mingle with the "big" birds. The young ones didn't have any problems, even when Fuglee roo came over to show authority over them. They just stood there and held their ground. Old Fugs just turned and walked away from them! Then, the lowest on the young chick pecking order went after Pip, and he runs screaming! Not a good sign. My big pullets are way meaner to the new ones than the cockerel, but these youngins' are close to their size and don't run screaming away from them, so I think they have a better chance to affiliate themselves into the flock. They are all in the big coop tonight because of the cold and wind, and I think they will stay there. They are in a seperate pen within the coop, but tomorrow I will let them all mingle. Poor Pip will have a traumatic day for sure, but he'd better grow a pair if he's to survive!

Next week I hope the builders will be here to start on the new coop. Then Fuglee can have a pad to himself, with his favorite gal. Maybe then Pip will come into his own, but I don't know, as he's scared to death of the pullets too! What to do, what to do??

Anyway, no, I won't be making extra pens. I really do like this "hens are free ranged, boys are in a large bachelor pad" idea, I just need to settle some arrangements on who stays, who goes, and MAYBE think about giving some boys a completely different place to sleep and hide. I've got an Araucana, an Ameraucana, and well, perhaps now another Ameraucana who need it.

Like I was saying to my sister, Marans are great and all, but golly, we tend to find that they aren't the best with others. They tend to have weird mood issues. Course, some are just fine. Most of my BC's are perfect gentleman, but I've already gotten rid of a slightly aggressive (only attacks you if you face away from him) cockerel and another extremely skittish one.

Okay, bit of a conundrum here. I've been setting my BCM's eggs in the incubator. I finally figured out which one is laying, it's one of the 2 mossy girls. The first egg ever laid hatched a little while ago, and baby is yellow with a black stripe on its back?? What gives?

Haha maybe it was more of a west coast thing.. thats where I lived in the 80's lol. Wild child back then, I'm somewhat reformed now least that's my story and sticking to it especially when I tell it to my kids haha. Brody (long o sound) was like giving attitude...copping a 'tude etc. ...As in,
"He's getting all brody!" lolololol. Gawd I'm old. I really like groovy lol !!

just checked that bing lol...nope we didn't use it that way not stealing but.. as in "copping a 'tude" so maybe the same thing..sorta like stealing/fronting an attitude. Anyhow that's how I think of those bugger roos I have.
