Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

It sure is a pretty egg.

But what happened to that purplish egg you used to have? I've wondered what is was - Cayuga?

Well, that darn egg is actually the reason I've been wanting to change my av, to be honest. I get SOOOOOOOOOO many PMs asking about it, and I was getting somewhat weary of answering.

That mauve-y egg was laid by a Marans...I posted pics a long time ago in the old Marans thread, but when you'd run it under water, it would change back to dark brown, and then as it dried, it dried back to mauve. Let me see if I still have pics...

OH, I love this pic, too - sometimes when mine lay a lighter egg, they have VERY large speckles on them...really more like splotches, I'd say. Once, I got one that was almost an exact square:

(Sorry, kinda off topic....)

Really excited as we are getting a dozen eggs from Bargain and also getting a dozen eggs from another breeder who says they average a 6-8 on the egg scale. They even say they get a 9 from time to time. We shall see though

Wynette,

How odd that mauve egg is! That is such a neat color, did the hen ever lay another one like it? Just think, a purple egg layer!

I sooo cannot wait until some of my BCM pullets from you start to lay! hopefully only a few more weeks on the first batch, they are about 14 weeks or so now.

On the mauve egg, we also have a hen that lays an egg that 'changes' like that when wet. It's much lighter to start off with (almost white) and the brown color when wet is a bit lighter than yours but same concept. Anyone know what causes that?

thanks for the welcome pinkchick!

did I read earlier posts right that you are working on blue marans or was it blue copper? I'm an absolute sucker for a blue bird! I would just love a blue marans (all blue).

The hen that laid the egg in my old avatar would lay one exactly like that, about every 20-25 eggs. It was some sort of coating.

6littlechickies - my line usually starts laying between 22-24 weeks.

Hi, my husband and I are new to the Maran world. I have a French black Copper Maran rooster and 2 hens which have started laying eggs for a while now. The egg color is getting better and the size of the egg is starting to get bigger. I would like to know what you think of my birds. I guess the quality of them. I had a bunch of roosters but they are now in freezer camp.
