How difficult would it be to find a local decent blue copper maran roo this spring when we want to fertilize some eggs? Or to re-phrase this: Am i better off looking for a decent rooster when I want him rather than keeping multiple roos all year?
We are in eastern PA.

NOT!!!

We will talk chicken... (talk turkey

We are going to totally take advantage of the biological engineering classes... Does she like chickens??? (and I don't mean to eat) We will invent that pink bird that lays bright pink eggs.

A good roo is hard to find. I think the best you can do is start with eggs or chicks from a breeder
that will show you lots of pics of their birds, and eggs at all phases of their cycles. Out of these,
you might find one good roo; or more likely, you'll get one with potential that with selective breeding
to a hen (preferably not full sister, but aunt or daughter...your breeder can help you with
this by identifying and marking eggs) will give you a chance to hatch enough cockerels to give you a
few nice ones to choose from.

I think there are so few proper to standards out of good egg color lines out there,
that the chance of finding a good one locally as a cull (sell) are slim. Best to hatch eggs
from a trusted breeder with birds with good conformation and egg color, IMO...
Once they are showing potential at 16-20 weeks....the breeders are going to be holding
on to those showing the best qualities.

This is just MHO, but I've gotten some awesome adults out of hatching eggs that I feel
a breeder would never let out of their pens, as adults.

The Marans are not even close to reproducing "clones" yet...while some breeders of other breeds
are very close to this.

cpartist is right about the difficulty in finding the perfect roo, however, I will add this: If you find a rooster and hen that compliment each other then you can make a good rooster... It is all about confirmation first and then color balance...Find a rooster with the proper outline and w/o monumental incorrectable faults and the hen(s) that can correct the inadequacies.
