Never apologize for asking for this kind of help, no matter what thread you are in. We are all in this together.

What is your son's name? Of course, I am sure God knows who I am talking about when I ask Him to "watch over Debbi's son, bring him and the rest of his friends and all our young men and women home safely". Still, it's nice to add at least a first name.

Consider all prayers sent your way and your son's way, as well as big hugs of comfort to you!

Debbi-Absolutely! Prayers going up right now. I have 3 sons, and just imagining what you are going through brings tears to my eyes. Be sure to tell him when he gets home safely that there are a lot of people who truly appreciate his service.

If you can grab her, can you look under her hackles and see any new feather growth, or around her tail? Maybe she is going to start a molt, age sounds about right. Some of my Wellie girls will loose their breast feathers during molt just like a broody will, but they have never gone broody

. Is she still laying? If still laying, is she still in full production or has she slowed? Have you noticed her egg color lightening up at all or getting somewhat splotchier than normal? Has her comb lightened up or does it seem a little more pale than normal, or the skin on her face?

She stopped laying mid Dec. will have to check and see if new feathers are coming in or what... silly bird, we did move her up to the heated pen in the garage.

Finally got a couple good pics of my Maran. He is a huge dude! We finally moved them to their new pen and we had to carry him. My husband did it with 2 arms around him.
What do you all think? He looks like maybe too many points on his comb, isn't it supposed to have 5? What about the rest of him?

Hi,
pinkchick, you asked me about the breeding of the Splash Marans eggs I posted two or three days ago that had such nice dark coloring. Here is the gal's answer: My Splash came from a breeding of Channing Grisham line, breeding Blue to Blue. Once in a while some copper will show up, but most are Blue Splash, not many are Blue Copper Splash. Thanks, H

So...is this good???

Mel, there is a list on BYC of what you should and shouldn't feed chickens. I don't think it mentions laying, though... No citrus is the biggest thing, I guess.
https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=2593-Treats_Chart Scroll all the way down for the "don'ts".

It has been my experience that the hens lay well with a variety of greens and fruit. My hens cleaned up all the excess figs, pears, and persimmons from under my trees if I didn't pick the fruit fast enough, and all laid well. (Yntil broodiness and moulting set in, that is...) All "orchard fruits" are loved by my hens, and they gobble up pomegranate seeds, if i am willing to share, that is...! Kale is #1 favorite, though!

good fortune,
D-
