Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The real camera and I sat in the pen this morning for 20 minutes to get these better than cell phone but not fabulous pictures. LOL

Like before I promise no crying or arguing about any comments/critiques. I'm excited to hear your expertise and will probably have tons of questions.

My pre-teen chicks. They are out of the brooder but in a pen with a small light before they go out into the Land of Misfit Toys Grow-Out Pen. They have nice blue legs like previously mentioned that was needed on splash marans.

How about some chicken butts? These are my 2 Splash POL. The one on the right is what I consider the lesser of the two. If she is bred to a rooster with blue legs will that help her offspring on their leg color even though hers is light?

Better of the 2 IMO.

Please excuse his legs. He wasn't happy about me being in the pen and wanted to get away from me for the most part. I did notice today that his legs are a lighter blue but they aren't white like the pullet. He also doesn't have any copper "bleeding" onto his chest.

The other pullet.

From what I am told of silver cuckoo, what you're referring to is sun damage, and it affects silver cuckoo, blue, and white birds. The only thing you can do to avoid this is to keep them inside.

The gold that you see in some cuckoos is due to those particular strains being crossed at one time with the wheaten, and what you are seeing is autosomal red.
Wynette, The good bred White chicken will not turn yellow if you leave them in the Sun all the time. This is something that has to be bred for in the beginning. The Gold on the male is just an example of what you say about the varietys being crossed by someone that doesn't know what they are doing.

Since you have slate leg females I can not understand why you would want to breed the white leg female. Are you intending to breed Splash or Blue copper ?

Vicki, I believe we could breed the BC female out of the Splash an dBlue Copper back into them without a problem. I would never use a BC male regardless if he was from the Blue Copper and splash. The BC male from the Blue Copper and splash should be culled soon as they feather and you can see what color they are.

On a side note- is anyone here planning on going to the North East Poultry Congress? I am begging the hubby to go- would love to see some nice birds up close and personal. Then maybe I can convince hubby to part with my blue copper boy lol

I intend on breeding Splash. I didn't know if the white leg pullet should be culled or will a slate legged rooster over her cover up the white? I'm trying to understand the genetics.
