Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have seen a decent number of whites at several shows, several in the jr shows. The black have been the ones that are not around. Don't know why,I would have thought they would be more popular. I have one black pullet but I'm going to put her in with the blue ones. I am thinking,if I put pure blue and pure black with a good black copper rooster am I going to get blue copper and black copper? Or would some be only blue and some only black,no visible copper? Anyone know how that works?
Breeding the Black Copper over Blue or Black or splash is not the same as breeding BBS. You can breed the black Copper over the three colors but do not put the black Copper young fowl back into a good Black Copper as you will be going backward

Pinkchick here is another pic of my Blue Marans roo. The flash makes him look like has splash feathers and yellow eye. But his eye is correct color and no splash coloring is present. VIVI

This is just a guess based on what I have seen and what people have said about the 'black' marans they have purchased as 'solid blacks' that have ended up carrying gold : I think probably a lot of people bred supposedly black females that were really carrying gold (so really bcm) into their black flocks early on. That is probably why so many blacks really might throw gold somewhere down the line and the truly solid blacks are rare.
Probably someone like Bev Davis or those who have been breeding them for 20 yrs or so would know the real low-down on this and hopefully someone can clarify but it makes sense that it could happen. The female black and blue coppers can easily 'hide' their coppering thus looking solid.

If you put pure solid blue or black in with your BCM and blue coppers you could get chicks that carry gold, silver etc. You might not know if the resulting females are carrying copper so if you put them back in with your solids you might have a surprise popping up in future generations. If you have solid blues or blacks it might be better to use them with a silver based bird if you had to use something else...rather than introduce the copper/gold genes, plus I believe the BCM also carries mahogany....
