Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

yeah. I let them set a day to get to room temp. waited 3 days to put the turner on. My issue is I have spent 300.00 on shipped penedesenca eggs. None have hatched. I put my eggs in there in betwen and getting 85-90% to hatch...

Eggs are dark but not as dark as some of the marans.

The splash pullet came from a bluexblue mating. I don't know if that has something to do with it. I know at three months I call her black. If its a very dark blue that would be great,as that's what I'm after. The rooster is a very dark blue but you can tell its not black. All four chicks did look like those pics right after they were dry. One thing that favors what you say is that I can see a lighter shade of lacing, and I have never seen lacing on black.

It could take a bit longer than 3 months to tell what she really is, heck until a month ago I swore blue bells that this cockerel I have was black, then I got a good look at him one day out in the good natural light and not in very shaded light and sure enough I could see some edging on him and his black didn't seem as black as it had before. He is out free ranging on this most particularly beautiful blue skied sunny December morning and he looks dark dark blue. When he wanders over to the coop area that is densly treed and dark and he looks black.

Do you have any photos of this bird at a couple days old and do you have any photos of it now?

O k. I took this pullet and two black copper pullets out in the sun,I agree with very dark blue. Extremely dark blue. Great lacing which is not there with BC. Thanks for the responses.

x 2 on this! Sometimes the blues are so very dark they truly look black. This guy on the left looks black but they are really both blue copper cockerals. The guy on the left looks black in every way until you lift his outer feathers and the fluff underneath is more bluish (see back on his left bottom near his tail). I've had some that were even darker than this dark guy but were still blue.
