Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

CUTE Babies!
They should all be blue chicks if they came from the Black to Splash mating. Blue color can vary greatly and produce very light blue birds to very dark blue that almost appears black.
Look forward to seeing how they mature! Please continue to update us on them as they grow.
That's what I was thinking.. 100% blue. I do know a lot about horse color genetics and the 'blue' gene works very much like the 'creme' gene in horses.

I guess I am MOST excited to see what color they get in their hackles. Because that hen is a splash and I don't know her genetic background who knows what color they will be... I don't see any copper on her, but I know that is pretty impossible to find with splash.

Looking today, many of them have little white feathers on the tips of their wings. Know what that is about? Or is that just the feathers coming in? Bad/good/who knows?

Two different chicks.

I don't know how many of you are doing a New Years Hatch, but I have chicks going into lock down tomorrow. . . . .

my preferred size for welded wire is 1"x1", but will also use 1"x2". Not gonna lie, its not the cheapest material out there, but have been fortunate enough to pick up rolls and even old pens others have built on sales, auctions, or places like craigslist. To me its worth it. I build pens that share sides and use the welded wire on the outside where it is vulnerable to predators and then use chicken wire on the shared wall and at the bottom of the wall, will put a panel of wood about 24" up so the roosters won't fight with each other. Works well

That is what I figured you would use. There is none locally here.... and I read that the weasels (the smallest and meanest ones) can fit anywhere a hot dog can. Insane that something so small could take down a flock! Mean little buggers I guess..... I hope to never meet one or the damage he has done. I'll keep my eye out on craigslist though for some material. I do have access to hardware clothe, but I want to be effective too...

Quick up date on my "predator' lol. I got 52 game cam pics of a housecat getting in the trap and another one trying to get it out LOL!. These were young kitties way too small to do that kind of damage let alone kill a big ole rooster. I set it all up again tonight...so the adventure continues grr.
Did you see anything last night? ?

Happy New Years to all my BY friends. I am new to this thread but look forward to constructive criticism and comments... What else does one do on NEw Years eve but take pictures of their flock and post for comments. My small flock consists primarily of Wyandottes but I do have one lovely Black Copper Maran hen who was the first of my chicken obsession!!! I'm posting a few pictures of her here and look forward to hearing your comments...
Hi! Do you have another picture of this pullets comb......particularly the blade or the back section of the comb?

Y'all are making me yearn to incubate! Or shop for land, lol!

dajen - is your run covered, or is it really that dry where you are?
