Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Well after coming on here and reading that first post, I'm almost afraid to ask if anyone has any Maran chicks for sale in the Central Florida. Notice I said almost. :)
Thanks for any help.

Just waiting on the Blizzard to hit , so thought I would get behind the computer again.

Has any one ever worked the Light Marans or whatever color they will be in the end before. I would expect they would use a Light Sussex with White Marans. It would need to be something with white undercolor and not slate.

Don, are you seeing anything yet? They say that we're to get 4-7" here, beginning around 3 p.m. today, but so far, nothing...
Well, I spoke too soon. Just went & looked out the window, and the snow has begun to fly.

Don, when you say "light" are you referring to patterns such as Columbian, or with the solid white variety? There were some very nice solid Whites at the Newnan show, but the egg color is not near where it should be (I'm basing this very loosley, as I saw 2 eggs in cages...there were several there, probably at least 25 or more, so some may be where they need to be color wise).

Wynette, Thinking about trying a cross of the light Sussex with the White Marans. The french do not have much on the Columbian"Ermine" Marans so looks like it is not there either.

Hmm...Light Sussex is the same pattern as Columbian/Ermine, yes? I think if I was considering making a Marans with the pattern, I would be tempted to use a Plymouth Rock in Columbian as the type is more "Marans like" - but then you'd have the yellow legs...it's a beautiful pattern, in my opinion. I have Columbian Rock and they are gorgeous. I've not seen a Sussex in person, are they tightly feathered enough? I'm sure they must be or you wouldn't be considering them.

If you were ready to fight yellow legs I would rather see silver penciled Marans using the pencilled rocks. :)

I believe the cross for good Ermine would be a Light Sussex x Wheaten Marans that way you would have better egg color to start. I have seen very nice white eggs but killer wheaten eggs!!

Sussex are very handsome looking in person.
