Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Posted about this not too long ago, but gonna try and see if anyone else has an opinion on this. It's kinda bugging me about his color... This little roo is supposed to be a Wheaten Marans. He doesn't look like my other Wheaten roo at all. Should I wait a few more weeks to see if any color comes thru... or did I get the newest Marans color - Mutt? This pic he is one of those little blonde fluffy chicks. Sorry, can't find a better pic of the 3 wheatens at the moment. This is him this week. So far the only color coming thru anywhere is black. NO color anywhere!
You got ripped off. That is not only NOT a wheaten it is not a pure marans with those yellow legs. Sorry.

I just wanted to let you know WHY it is obvious he is male.....the red on the wings is 100% males always. Today i was sorting chicks and one i was not sure about. Picked up the wings and saw the red saddle feathers coming .....roo for sure. There are several things you can look for to help.
Thank you

The mom could very well be the cuckoo maran. They also have orpington hens, orpington/rir hens, buff brahma/rir, light brahma, and I believe they also have cuckoo maran/rir mix. I was thinking black sex link too! I am fine with her being all black! Just want her to be a her! haha!

Please help a newbie...I have a Blue Copper Marans and a Black Copper Marans and a BlueCM/Amer OE that are old enough to be laying. We found the very fist egg under the coop last Sat, unsure when it was actually laid. (That was one day shy of them being 18 weeks old, so we hadnt started looknig regularly) and the second in the nesting box on Sunday. The next three were laid on Thurs, Sat, Sun...these were obvously from the Blue...she was the only one hanging around in the box. Is it possible that all of these eggs are from the blue? I thought the first one was from the BCM, because I think the color is different.....But then she hasnt laid anything else. Can the first egg be THAT different of a color from the rest? And now looking at all of them I feel like the second one doesnt match the next 3 either....Thank you for your time.

This is my BCM hen's first season. She laid her dark egg for a few months but then she stopped. She hasn't laid for about a month. She's eating well & acting normal. Does this breed not lay year round or in the summer?

Yes it is possible. They can lay slightly different colored eggs. If you want to see if your pullets are laying yet, pick them up and feel the distance between their pelvic bones. There will be at least a fat finger's width distance between the bones if they are laying and if they haven't started to lay yet, those bones are very close together. Feel the Blue Copper first since you know she is laying, then check the others and compare.

My Wheaten Marans Millie finally laid her first egg! My Blue Marans Charlotte started laying a couple weeks ago, but is 6 weeks younger! I was starting to get impatient, but her beautiful egg was well worth the wait!

Millie's egg is the one on the left, Charlotte's is the one on the right:

(This picture doesn't even do them justice!)

And Millie:

First Maran eggs! Yay!!!!
