Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Did you ever get a picture of the predator? I have been watching for an update :caf

Thanks for checking in with me.....I wish I had some news from the Fish and Game, but I have not heard a word from them. Yes, the camera's finally got a picture, it is a mountain lion. Has only been back twice, instead of nightly like it was last week........however, it is not finding any chickens in the coop because they have taken to sleeping in a tree right outside the back of my house. I don't mind that they are sleeping in the tree, but I sure do mind the pooh in my walk way and they will start to mind it when the tree looses the rest of its leaves. I have a heck of a time trying to get them out of it at bedtime, so I have just left them be for now but that won't be the case in another couple of weeks when the weather really starts to turn. By hook, crook, or net they will be sleeping back in there coop. This getting them down of the tree is for the birds.........pun intended. :p

let me know when you want some eggs. I will hook you up!

What about the poulets. I am gussing I will be better off breeding my poulets to my bcm roo and coming up with a true blue then. Not sure if I will keep Cesar at least not for breeding blues .hmmmm a lot to think about. Thanks

I hope someone else comes by to advise you. I do not have enough experience with Birchens and still not 100% clear on how silver works. I only have a couple years semi- experience with Birchens....my experience lies only in hatching and raising them long enough to see faults that I did not want to try to deal with.

I will say this and don't know if I am correct but...if the BCM are from the same parents as the Birchen male....then I believe that they could carry the silver and this is where I digress and wait for folks like Gilavina to give thought as she has worked hard with her Birchens now for a few years and would be able to steer you in the right direction.

I know that splits for birchen and copper can HIDE the other and are very hard to work with. I have that issue on some silver pencilled wyandottes.....not sure I want to work with that problem or not. they can LOOK silver and still hide gold.

. Hello all just wanted to post a picture of my favorite blue marans hen I was sitting in my chair out in the pen enjoying some peace time when she come up beside me and sat down with me for a while

Well, since everyone seemed to agree that my 3 maran chicks were most likely roosters, I went and bought another 3 that are within a week of the same age as my first ones!

Judging the new ones by the way mine looked and the couple of definate boys left in the brooder, I am pretty sure that these 3 are pullets, but will be posting some pictures in the morning so you guys can give me your opinions as well!

Quote: I'm an old professional "tree chicken catcher" !!! all you need is a one foot piece of 2X2 drilled cross-ways into the end of a 1X4 (any length that will reach the chickens) i usually use an eight foot piece. Using a light just slide 2X2 under the chicken's feet and when they are standing on the 2X2 bring them out and down .(no harm done)
I've also climbed a lot of trees catching game chickens over the years in the gamechickenlife .

That is amazing! I have never heard of a Mountain Lion breaking into chicken houses! That is scary!! Hope Fish and Game helps you. I would worry about Owls getting your chickens at night, so hope you are able to convince them to return to their coop!

Brilliant!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing this idea with me Shannon! After homework is done today I am going to get my "tree chicken catcher" ready. I didn't even think of trying to get them after dark.
