Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Cuckoo roo #1

Cuckoo roo #2

How are my boys looking so far? They are still young, around 4 months old. The roo in the second pic is more dominant and holds his tail higher. The roo in the first pic still holds his in a more submissive position for now. The more dominant roo just started crowing the other day and is very interested in the pullets already. Lol. Any opinions would be welcome.. the good and the bad.

I do not see anything not to like with your males. They have nice feet feathering, I believe I like #2 a little better though. Comb appears to be a little better at this age. real nice.

I am a first time chicken mamma, and one of my first choices on my list of chicks was a Maran. Her name is Mulan, but we call her Ping for short. She is so sweet, we love her very much!

Looks like a clean legged Cuckoo Marans (not Maran :) ). Shes a cutie! Congrats on little Ping!

Hi all! I'm fairly new to byc and bychickening! Lol! I was wondering if there are any good resources on breeding marans. I have 3 black copper, 1 white, 1 golden cuckoo and 2 splash marans. One of my black copper I am suspecting is a roo. We should know in a couple more weeks as he is only 8 weeks old but his feathering growth pattern has been a lot different from the other flock. If I did end up with a roo, I was thinking it would be fun to have a Marans coop and breed my Marans. Anyone know what the color outcome would be? Dominate colorings? Is it even ok to mix these colorings? Thank so much for any help.

If you look closely on your suspected BC Marans male at this age his comb should look much larger that the female. Post a picture and we can tell you. If you breed all the colors together all you will have is a bunch of mixed Marans and they will not be worth much except for egg laying. The egg will be a lot lighter for a couple of generations. Did your Marans come from a breeder or an Hatchery ?

Update - I'm the gal with the Birchen Marans / Black Copper Marans cross chick... I took new photos this morning. I know that a couple folks responded thinking that it my be a female, but I really don't know. Look at the comb development? And this chick is always standing so darn upright. Makes me wonder. I'd love you guys to weigh in with opinions. First photo is the original one I posted, and the other three are from this morning. 8-days passed between the first photo and the others. :)
Hi KerryP! I have a Birchen/BCM mix as well! :) and I'm also on the fence of it being boy or girl :) How old is yours? Any updates as to what you think yours is?

Here they are are about a week old. I will have to try to snap a new picture of them now but they are so darn fast! Lol! The comb really isn't that big yet but it is a little redder and I was inspecting the head and could see flecks of copper coming in on the suspected roo. I got them from my pet chicken. Thanks again for your help!
