Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

rustywoman: His tail is about a 45 give or take.. He has wierd tenny's on... Maybe a little over 45 but small potatoes as he is what I had left!!! Thanks for the compliment... I will find a pic of his chest.. Just a note to the novice breeders out there... This is not a showbird.. He is breeding stock.. I am using him on hens with not enough copper/red to improve their hackle color... I am not breeding for roosters here The result would not be as good. Also... If you tail angle in the female and the male are complimentary perhaps you will get a desired result... Mine are so I expect a correct tail for the female and that is the result I achieved so far.

This bird would not be picked as a top bird as a show I doubt... But he works with what I have...

My BCM pullets (presley/valentine lines) are now 22 weeks old, yet I'm still waiting for that coveted dark colored eggs. When do you think they'll start laying? I can't wait any long...geeeeer.

Okay everyone, here are my boys. They are both 7 months old. Their tails are beat up a bit because they are kept in the same pen and have their spats on occasion. What I do know is their combs are bad and they are a little sparse on the shank feathering.

Here is Ramses:

Here is Hannibal: (the white spot is paint not feathers)

I finally got some new pictures of my rooster even though he wasn't cooperating this morning. I will put some of the hens up soon, they just molted.

Geebs, thank you. That helped alot. And this is him after a molt right? So he probably had a little more red before the molt?

gvntofly--Here is what I see (and I am no expert) If I am wrong PLEASE say so. I am learning here.

overall quality I would say very nice. He has good color and size to him. I am questioning his tail angle. Is that too high? And another question--the ear coverts--they are on the dark side, will that make much impact on the color of his pullet offsprings hackle color?

I would like to know what on earth is going on with this rooster
. It is raining but I went to take pics anyway. This is what I saw. I knew he had some white underneath but was hoping that it was just him molting. When he isn't wet you don't see it hardly at all. What a surprise I had! Am I correct that this is not a molt? Is it as bad as I think it is?

Nope... still premolt... (I get it now).. ha ha..

Personally I wouldn't worry about a washed out down feathering.. I have no clue as to whether it is important or not...

That is an AWESOME question.... Everything about this breed is in "the little things" so there may be something to it... My bird is the same so I can't wait to see what the answer is... Bev you out there???? HELP!!!

No this is not premolt and the white is not ccceptable.

Just a little disclaimer though, if you like how your fowl look then by all means breed them the way you like since you are the one buying the feed and doing the work. This has always been my motto.

Then when he molts I bet most of that red disappears and he will look fantastic. Me, I like a little red in the breast feathers and I believe too that it is a good sign of dark eggs. I could be wrong though...

So, those are down feathers? I feel my brain growing already. There is so much to learn about this breed. I love it. And even the smallest details can make a huge overall impact on the next generation.

If we yell together do you think she will hear us? BEV... Ohhhhhhhh Bev........ we need you!
