Some good lookin' girls!

I'll get some photos in ooh an hour. I've got a photo of my most recently passed away cockerel, Maple. I think a couple people here may remember him and his "feminine" name. He was HUUGE and VERY mature looking at 4 months. He was amazing! He looked 1 year old. . . But eventually his laziness, eagerness to attack my heels, and not so promising egg color in his genes got him to be in the freezer camp. I must admit, although he had a wonderful, deep looking chest - Once dressed, it was all feather and no meat. The Araucanas actually have more breast meat than him, and are 6 pounds smaller.

Now all I have left for Black Copper cockerels is Cacao, a cockerel I hatched from Wynette, and two unnamed cockerels from Cree Farms. (Bev Davis lines) - VERY excited for those two boys! One is the sweetest, tamest, most laid-back cockerel I have ever known. Anyone can come right up to him, pet him, pick him up, feed him by hand, whatever. . . He won't spook or complain one bit.

I remember Maple Illia! I'm so sorry to hear that he had issues he couldn't get over.

Thanks everyone for the compliments on my girls' eggs. I'd love them anyway, but the pretty eggs sure are nice!

Geebs - That prize pullet looks great! Here's to hoping she lays a nice dark egg, too!

I've got to get be a laid back cockerel like yours, Illia. My current boy has been to chicken jail a number of times... But he is pretty!

Okay, you ready? This is Maple at 4 months of age:

He was one hunky chunky fella!

I must really admit, he was a gorgeous guy. . . And that is a photo taken from a horrible camera.

Ok, so I have a question for all of you marans enthusiasts. When did you realize you were a marans person? Was it the egg color? The appearance of the marans? Or their dispositions? I would love to hear your stories!

At first, before I had them, I bought a bunch of eggs like crazy just because of that amazing egg color. Then, once my babies grew up - I loved their laid back personality, their huge, husky bodies, and their ability to stand up to almost any other chicken. . . . Except little 4-5 pound Araucanas.

Ah... It was egg color for me too! The darker the better. I just love their personalities too. I have a couple of wheaten marans and they are very sweet. I wouldn't trade my wheaten roos for anything!

Then I researched the breed found out about their personalities and sweet dispositions, was a huge lurker in the old Marans thread like..... FOREVER ...

over all of the photos of everyone's Marans, read all their experiences and stories about these wonderfully friendly birds and was hooked.

Then I got some......that's all she wrote! I will NEVER have chickens and not have my beloved Marans or my other all time favorite breed Welsummers.
