Wynette, I'm about 99% now on 5 roos and 7 pullets! I'll post some current pics this weekend! They are 4 weeks old today!

Green fire farms does ship chicks at different ages at the same time. When your chicks came in - - - did they are look like they were the same size ? ?

I think # 1 and # 3 are pullets and #2 and # 4 are roos.

Do you KNOW that ALL your birds came from the Bev Davis pen or did you get some from both pens ? ?

Funniest thing...

I bought several batches of black copper marans this past spring off of ebay just on a lark, from several different sellers. Most were recommendations from others here at BYC. Mostly had lousy hatches, or all roosters, or I ended up losing them. I had one batch off of ebay from someone I had never heard of, but was recommended by someone via PM (I wish I could remember who recommended them). Hatched out 5 chicks. As they were growing out, I tossed them in the free range pen and pretty much forgot about them, since Im really not going to pursue the black coppers.

Well, I dont know how old they are now, maybe 3 months, but I just looked at them....all girls, by the way....and they are gorgeous!!! Lightly feathered legs, beautiful copper around their neck, no mossiness, just really nice girls! Ill try and get some pics tomorrow.

Well, let me tell you - - - this young gentleman knows his stuff pretty good. I asked him to try to
sex them for me. They were only a week old and he got it perfect. . . I went home with 4 pullets
and he kept the roos. My purchase of the 4 pullets from him was my first chick purchase. I have
done a lot of learning since then.

I had no idea that I was going to fall in love with the marans.
I used Henderson's breed chart to help me narrow down want I wanted to try to 6 - 8 breeds.
Then I hit BYC forum, craigslist, feed stores, and swaps until I collected everything I wanted to try.

We've had to add onto the coop once already. Next, we are going to build some breeding pens and build another coop.

This is a hoot. My top riding student, Justin, who is a roper and rides drill team, is also the president of the FFA and Left Tackle on the Football Team and a Varsity Golfer. He went to state and brought home a medal in roping and drill team and the top archer in the district.... and he also does chickens as well as market animals. He does the Extemporaneous Public Speaking also... Never underestimate the FFA... He is not uncommon for our area

Does FFA do chickens? Or can you do chickens in FFA? and back to the marans topic we made our first purchase of eggs today! Let's hope everything goes well and we get something we can work with. Woo hoo! The bator will be working next week!
