Dave , would it be possible to get a picture from the front on this nice male. Best type male I have seen on here since I have been here. Myself for what I am doing do not like all the White . It would all depend on what your goal is in the future.

My main rooster:

I haven't even begun to sort through the pullets. They are a mess and I'll have to look up in my notes what on earth all those leg bands represent.

I know there are some very nice ones in there though.

While looking through some of the proposed Standards and the French standard I can see where lots of Marans people have given up on trying to raise Show type Marans. The standards are so vague that a new breeder will be lost before they can get started. I had thought some of the mistakes I found had been taken care of before. Once they are approved they will not likely be changed later on.

On the Black Copper male it states they should have Copper Hackle and Saddle feathers. How many of you have ever seen these two feathersection without the Black center of the feather ? Actually it is a Black feather with copper border.

In the USA the Wheatens have this black stripe in the male Hackle and Saddle also.

Anyone like to comment on any of this.

Well Don, it's getting to where I'm afraid to check this thread anymore because I keep finding new things to look for in my birds.

So now I'm looking at pics close up to check the feather color.

Here's one of my original roos - too much red in breast and had not had his first molt. I see what looks like an infamous white fluff feather near tail which I presume is his but after I first read about that I checked this guy, who is now a couple of years older and he had no white down or undercoat - so is it possibly a thing they only have when younger? It's also possible it's a flash/light reflection but I know how you feel about that explanation.

In any event, here's a close up of his hackle and saddle feathers. I don't see the black stripe down the middle on him like I do on many of my others. But I am wondering where all this is going. I mean, at this rate, will any bird ever be "good enough" (for the Show crowd) and I mean that in a nice, non-confrontational way but as a serious question. I think all of this is starting to scare the majority of people away from raising Marans because, as you said, it is enough to get "lost" in.

I entered 3 marans in a show this weekend. I went yesterday to see how they did, and check on them. They were the only 3 marans in the show, all in different classes, and they each recieved 2nd place. I asked the ladies at the desk, and they let me talk to the judge. he said that the birds were beautiful and based on physical appearance they should have been 1st place birds, however you cannot judge a marans without an egg to judge with it. I am VERY dissapointed. I feel that my birds werent judged at all since they didnt have an egg in their cage. I asked the man when I should expect my rooster (who was entered) to lay an egg so that I could determine his quality, he had no answer. I can see why many people get discouraged with showing this breed when they are not fairly judged. they should have been judged on their appearance, just as the other birds were...am I wrong?

Thanks Debbi, geebs, Pinkchick and Snowbird for your comments. I went out today and attempted to get some front/head on shots. Here is one of them. If you need to see other shots or this one does not show what you need to see, I'll gladly post more.

Thanks, again!

Dave, thanks I was just trying to see width and color on the chest. Very Nice.

I agree... We did however have a licensed judge this year at the state level so the win is all that much sweeter. Chaseofhope It was good experience anyway....congrats on the Seabright placing....It will take a while for the Marans... I lived just over the river by the tracks from where the fair is... At the bottom of the West hill, right off the Green River... I lived there after I got out of College many moons ago, PreCasino days.

P.S. I still like your bird... from the front as well. Nice girth. Practically perfect compared to what I have had... Yours is a far better example than my own... Wanna trade.. ha ha.. Are you going to get some Cottage Hill line hens to go with that?
