Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

OK - - - the APA standards - - where do you purchase this at? ? When will the NEW one come out that has the NEW marans standard in it ? ?

Math...try to find it at your local library. Mine has 6 copies of the 2001 edition.

I didn't want to buy one with the 2010 version coming out soon...November? I've heard.

Ok - - snowbird, this is what I had understood before. So, I was not planning on breeding my mossy girls. THEN, I read and must of misunderstood the following :

Quote:
Geebs, my girls are 9 months old. . . . I got them as chicks around christmas 2009. 3 blue copper marans. . . . One with a couple of white springs on her head and light blue coloring (just sorry as they come . . . .). The second and third have mossy coloring to the body. One has nice coppering at the hackles, the other has very light coppering. ALL together - - - THREE duds for quality breeding !

I have one beautiful colored Black copper marans. All my eggs are riding in her basket ( so to speak) for getting some decent chicks to start my program with. She has smaller statue than the other 3, but my big boy roo should help bulk up her offsprings size.

Geebs could you clarify your earlier statement . . . How will the mossy hens work well with the rooster ?

THANKS everyone for your help - - - and I can now see that Harley does NOT have a squirrel tail. The feathers were so long and curly that I thought that was what I was seeing. It is not about the length or curl of the feathers. The feathers should not cross an imaginary perpendicular line (vertical) with an endpoint on at the base of the tail - - - THE PICTURE helped a LOT - - THANKS.

I do not think the Marans will be in the revised edition of the SOP, they have not been approved as yet.

Geebs here are some pictures I took when I got home tonight. Critique away, I can take it. The first pictures were taken in the morning so the light is different.

Harley didn't want to stand still. How would you count his points on his comb?

Harley and Scooter (my best hen I think) with a couple of the other hens.

I couldn't get him to hold still.

He was real interested in the camera.

Chop the sickles off his tail, seriously.

His tail is quite large for a Marans. As for his comb - I see 6 points. You basically count all the points but the "blade," which may look like a point but is the tip of the comb.

The color of course is gorgeous, other than that I think one more thing he could need is a little more of an upright body to show a more "deep" chest.

I can only assume that this is a young cockerel… Not a big huge comb…. Nice comb though not perfect…
Wattles are nice and uniform
His eye color may look a little light to me but acceptable
Ear coverts should be the same color as the hackle
The saddle and hackle is a little on the mahogany side as opposed to copper (might be picture)
But the outstanding feature to me is how uniform the color is throughout the bird… Quite an achievement
Nice horn color on the beak
He seems to straight backed…maybe shortbacked? It could have that appearance because of such a substantial tail.
Tail angle is correct though the coverts are too long
The bird lacks substance that I am sure he will get with age so I cannot hold it against him He appears to have good framework.
The tail feathers underneath have an appearance of gray… could be picture…
The leg feathering is nice and the shank color is optimal.

Overall this is a nice specimen…I would use this rooster to improve the red lacing on my hens that are lacking… He does appear to posses what it takes to improve that… Initially I thought him too black… See what a few more pix can do… I wouldn’t worry too much about the tail as the females are not likely to have a rooster tail though I would use my short tailed hens that need improvement…

Very lovely pictures.. thanks for giving me a chance to look at him…
He is quite striking!!!! I would love to have that eye Candy running around my yard.

SOMEBODY translate what Walt said . .. . .

1.) Why "Don't feed the bird any scratch feed" . . . . I don't feed very much, but I do use cracked corn as my bribe to get them to move from the coop to the free range area in the morning and then again in the evening to return to the coop.

2.) What does "The white in the wings / tails seems . . . . . I am confident that they will qualify for SOP" mean ? ?
The first sentence says is a DQ and then the above seems to imply that it would be ok,
so I KNOW I must be misunderstanding what was written.

Thanks - - - any one who wants to jump in here and help clarify this for me.

I'm going to take a guess here and someone correct me please if I'm off base, but I think what Walt meant by not feeding them any scratch feed is that it can turn white feathers yellow??????? Right? Geebs? Wynette? Illia? Lotsa?

Another guess at what Walt is saying about the DQ's is that "in general" pertaining to all breeds in the SOP that white in the wings and tails can be a problem and is considered a DQ for all, but he stated that after seeing one attempt at qualifying ( I assume a Marans with some white somewhere) and other birds with white at different shows that he is confident that they will qualify for the SOP. I believe that he stated that the SOP needs some more detail in this area and I think that he also stated previously that it is being worked on and possibly tweaked to accommodate this in the Marans. ???????? Anyway, that is my interpretation of it. Again if I'm off base somebody please set me straight.

That is close enough. Scratch can cause white feathers or white in feathers. I have seen plenty of Marans now without white feathers in the tail and wings, so they don't all have that fault.

Walt
