Where did you and you friend get your marans from last time?

How dark are those eggs ? ? You just can not tease like that - - - post some pics !

Hi everybody.

I don't remember getting an answer to my question of what a "tail break" is. If I did and missed it please forgive me but I would really like to know for sure

I think it must be when the roos tail is sort of split in half? My roos haven't molted yet (not even 6 months old) I was hoping this would change after a molt.

Is that what a tail break is and might it molt out?

Hi. My friend ordered hers from " My pet chicken " online. Thats where she got her other chickens from & the ones she gave me. I do not have any marans yet. They wouldn't ship just 2. The eggs are as dark as the ones posted on this thread. I have Bantams Silkies, cochins , frizzles, 1 EE & 3 large RIR. I have 5 that are crossed between each hen & my #1 silkie roo. I like in Pike, NH. Grafton county, on the VT boarder.

A tail break is when the tail stops following the line of the back and gives you the 45 degree angle.

Thank you Don, I hate to admit this but I still don't understand. I thought a 45 degree angle was good. So when he wrote that it had a tail break--what did that mean?

I will try and find the reference

Germaine,
I thought a tail break was where the tail does not flow smoothly off the back, but rather stops abruptly and then moves into the angle. I am probably wrong though.

I found the post and here are the references to tail break. I thought tail break was bad... is it? I am feeling really dumb right now.

OK Germaine, you have a ton of pics here, but not the best angles to make a determination. Here is what I have come up with based on what I can see.
#7 blue: Good body, it has a tail break and what color are the eyes?
#1 blue: Pinched tail and it could be shalloow in the underline.
#3 green: Comb problem and I can't tell too much more from the pics.
#22 pink: eye color? tail break, but appears to have a good body.
Dark eye: good body, tail break.
The cull that is loose. The photo's are not at an angle that I can make a decent evaluation.

There seems to be comb problems with some of the males, so I would use that to cull. I would also look very closely at the females as the comb fault will be there too......just not as obvious.

Picture what the tail would look like if it followed the same line as the back, straight right, when you have a break the tail goes in a different direction up. The tail break is good as long as it doesn.t go above 45 degree.

Don, has anyone told you today how wonderful you are? If not than I am the first. You are wonderful. If you had any clue how much I have been agonizing over the "tail break" you would laugh (or shake your head)

I have looked online and in books. Even the APA Standard. I couldn't find an answer. Maybe I just don't know where to look.

But thank you very much!
