Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The cockerel has what looks to be a squirrel tail developing, not much breast, and he's a little young but his shoulders should probably be a little more broad.

The pullet looks good so far, but she's young and you can't see much in that photo besides her poor coloring - She needs to actually have copper coloring on her neck. Also I would look into that nearly white earlobe.

If you want a good quality pair, those two wouldn't really work together in my opinion.

I do not see the squirrel tail at all, maybe a little narrow in the back. I think the pullet is better type wise.

His tail was bigger but then he lost some and now is growing them back, Thos pics of the hen are a little old but she is developing copper on her neck ill get some more recent photos of them both.

I see you have an auction up now. Do I read the auction correctly that all your birds free range together?

it's hard to explain how I free range. I tried Many things to let them out of coops and not be in the pens all day. First I had all out, they would be in different areas of the 6 acres in their color groups, I am outside all day. I have to be careful with roosters. I then tried freeranging just the hens for a little bit of the day. Now I have different groups freeranging. It's not really freeranging. More like playing outside while I feed, water, then they go back in kind of thing. The issue I have is nest boxes. The hens like to torture me and not use the ones I give them rather want to visit the other hens and lay in theirs. The roosters are like my babies, I can pick them up, put them here and there, put them in a run while I work. Its really hard to explain it and it makes putting up auctions hard to do:/ they are too friendly to be stuck in a coop. When each color goes out, gets their goodies in the ground, they are happy. Timed free-ranging is more like it

Hi

I was given mine a few years ago and I have been breeding them trying to get the egg color darker, this I have done. I am now working on other things to try and improve the line. I know that there are other people doing the same but don't think any one is selling any at the moment.

Bev

Wait... there are Golden Salmon in the US then? Who has them? How could a GS appear in a BC line? Aren't they genetically different?

Hi

I think they have been here longer than the black coppers.

Now I know you are joking, but you must realize that quailladyoffortmyers has kind of a right to be a little sensitive right now so I hope SHE realizes you are joking. The chicks are doing well in their new battery brooder.

It appears the club is going to do some research on the golden salmons and see if we can get stock that would allow us to repeat it routinely.

I didn't know the difference then.
I looked at the pictures and they looked good to me and the seller was in the same state. I've learned a lot here on the BYC thanks to all of you chicken people

That would be a funky breed. A chick duck...a Chuck! I remember my professor telling us about a dino chicken with TEETH...oh boy let's not go there...that's all we need...losing our fingers when we feed them strawberries!

Good luck with your 4H project Connie!

I absolutely am joking....hence the LOL... I was hoping to lighten the mood... She doesn't need an flack as we are all in middle of "projects" doing the best we can...

Warm wishes... It is the "intent" of this author to NEVER defame or pain anyone... Only to give a little comic relief. I am sure she knows.

That is intriguing to hear that this has been here prior to the BC's.... Who brought them...anyone know???
