She keeps us all smiling. Hey you could add a turkey and have turducken or perhaps turchucken! Always wanted to have one of those for Thanksgiving.

So, you fine folks are done with the HEAVY, HEAVY breeding conversations that have been going on for days - - - I have something light hearted to share . . .

I caught one of my marans stealing all the golf balls from the other nests. She worked so hard to get all the eggs and golf balls in one nest. THEN she laid her egg. I know what you are thinking . . . . A Broody marans

. . . Don't I wish

So, the egg has been laid and OFF the nest she hops

I have an egg stealing marans who doesn't understand the broody process. I have 14 other hens who won't even consider becoming broody or STEALING an egg. I had to put GOLF balls back in the nesting boxes because where ever the first egg of the day was laid EVERYBODY else wanted to lay their egg in the same box. We were running a week with one bird on the nest and 4 standing on the perch squarking at the hen who was laying. . . It got loud and threatening. Now, there is a golf ball in every box and the hens lay in all the boxes.

The egg stealer is the one who went broody back in May and hatched a EE chick. She had 4 EE eggs under her. She killed the first two as they hatched and got the third one correct. The fourth and last egg, never hatched. She did a good job raising it for the first week or two, and then decided she was done with the mommy thing and wanted to join the flock again.

It is FUNNY that I have 15 hens - - leghorns, marans, welsummers, wyandotte, and EE's AND SHE IS THE ONLY ONE who thinks about this broody thing

I would of thought for sure the wyandotte would want to do some hatching for me.

Hello Again Everyone! Boy it is hard to keep up with this thread!!!! Especially when I only understand a little bit. I posted a picture of my Wheaten Marans Roo for Critique and his extraordinarily full crop made it difficult. So, here are some more, hopefully better, pics of him. I don't think his crop is ever empty though!

Hi

The original ones came from a guy called Lester Stocker but don't know how he got them, it's a very long time ago.

How old is he again? Honestly the only problem so far that I see with him is that he looks pretty lanky, but he may just be a slow grower. Most of my Wheatens are.

In comparison to my best Wheaten cockerel, yours has better color, which I always really love, as I find a lot of Wheaten Marans have too much red showing up in unwanted areas.

Whew! Thanks! I think I have taken 100 pictures of him to get these ones LOL!

He is six months old, and since you mention it he has seemed to be a bit of a late bloomer. It was just within this last month his tail started to come in. He just started crowing three weeks ago.
What about the feathering on his legs? He is all but naked compared to my other two little cockerels.

The feathering is indeed really sparse, but I honestly don't see many heavily or decently feathered Wheatens. I'd love to obtain some though.

So yes, that is something you could work on, if you could.
