Anne, no I didn't intend the post for you, we have had several with young brother sister young wanting to know if it was ok to breed them together, and not asking about the brother sister.

I am on both Marans Club boards and here, so after reading all the posts for over a year I have to say that Wade Jeane must have hatched two million Marans, cuz everyone has his line. I will say what I said on another site. It only takes two years to totally ruin a line of birds if you do not know what you are doing, so at that point you lose bragging rights to whatever line it WAS.

Another observation........it appears that it is easier to produce good females in Marans and many of the other heritage breeds.

BTW: In my world there are breeders and propagators.....they are quite different! In the exhibition world the term breeder is only used by people that have huge accomplishments in the poultry world......and they rarely call themselves that. The term is usually only used by other people referring to them as a "breeder".

But keep in mind that I am a poultry snob.

I tend to agree with Bev on a comment she made on another board...at the end of the day, a Marans is a Marans - we should all be breeding to the proposed standard (if we're interested in exhibition stock). What bloodline they came from means nothing to a poultry judge - consistency and breeding to the (proposed) standard means everything! Thanks for you comments, Walt! And thanks so very much for participating in this thread!!

Geebs, My line of Black Copper Marans are basically Wade Jeane and a little Ron Presley throwed in and I am not trying to stay in one line. I would breed a bird from Wanda at the meat market if I thought it would help my Marans. I am breeding for a big Marans with good type. No small female or males here ever. After this next batch I hatch they will just be old Don's Marans. We can put any name on the Marans but it will not change how good they breed.

Oh, forgot to say never another breeder with white in wingor tail section. No white undercolor in the neck hackle undercolor.

I think to develop the good Marans Male you will have to do some of the single matings like I will do thin fall and if that doesn't work will have to leave it up to the experts. I still have around 125 pullets here and about 60-70 have real good type with good back, good front end and nice spread underneath. Now back to producing some equally good males.

Just a note... I am a hobbyist not a breeder... As Walt commented there is Most definetly a difference.. I am just posting theory and things that I found that worked... Please if any of my theories don't jive with the experts... defer to the experts... I do check my findings as best i can...

(Walt.... a snobbyist... lol
