Hey I like your signature. I am going to pick up some Delaware Eggs tomorrow to hatch too. These will be my first Delawares, but I have heard great things about them. They are suppose to take our heat a lot better than the marans do ! !

ABSOLUTELY ! The only birds that I have had troubles with laying have been the marans. The EE's, leghorns, wyandottes, and welsummers do a great job of laying almost every day.

From 4 marans that are less than a year old, I have collected 13 eggs in 8 days. These are and have been the only slackers in my flock of varied birds. NOW, I am pinpointing it down to 2 hens not laying. The other 2 marans hens have laid 10 of those 13 eggs.

Hi

Increase the protein, I have found that they need more protein than other breeds.

Are you talking on a regular basis, or during times of molt/stress? What level of protein do you recommend?

What do you recommend I use to increase the protein ? ?
What's you favorite way to increase their protein ? ?

At one time, I was buying unshelled salflower seeds. The one feed store in our area that was carring it - - had an issue with bugs in the bags. As soon as you opened the bag, out came the bugs. After that, I quit supplementing their diet with the seeds.

My cleaniest feed store carrys only the BASIC bagged feeds. For example, they don't carry medicated game starter. I tried this for a while on my chicks BECAUSE it was extra high protein.

Unfortunately, I'm in a no-rooster area, so I would have to have someone just bring over a good looking boy for an afternoon trist sometime if I want chicks from her. I'm really hoping for some nice dark eggs from her, though. I'll post more recent pics of her and her first egg, when and if she decides to get to work like the rest of my girls.
