What about a screen saver? Also guilty!

I wouldn't be "disgusted" with hatching a few wheatens...that is a known occurrence with the Jeane line. Since you got more than one, they must have very strong Jeane lines, which will (likely) mean egg color should be super dark.

Please remember that the Marans are fairly new to the U.S., without much diversity in breed lines. It will take years of diligence on ALL our parts to get them to breed more true!

White shank fuzz (turned black, except ONE feather):

In the past three year I have hatched over 1000 BC chicks from basically Wade Jeane lines and have never hatched a Wheaten chick in the bunch. If someone sent me BC eggs and they hatched out as Wheaten I would be more than disgusted. How are the BC supposed to get better when people sell everything they can get their hands on as BC . Egg sellers should have a responsibility to inform the buyer if their Marans eggs hatch out as just any kind of junk.

I have as good or better Marans as most but would never sell eggs as it is not helping promote Marans by selling a unfinished product. I do not care if anyone else agrees with me on this or not, It really gripes me with all the garbage being sold as great Marans when most are junk. We see chicks and started birds coming on here that are supposedly from good Marans, that are pure junk.

Love the baby pics!

hate to bring this up again, but I have a question about the dreaded white feathers in black-coppers.

I posted a while back about my cockerel and I got some compliments. I stated that he doesn't have any white feathers. He is five almost six months old. At closer inspection I found white down feathers around his neck and a little along his back.

Now these feathers are white at the base and half way up they turn black or copper. They do not show thru. I really had to pull the feathers apart to find them. He also has downy white feather that are very short. Is this the dreaded white feathers or should I still wait and see if they go away? Sorry to bring this up again, but these feathers do not look like what I have seen in some of the pictures on this thread. Thanks anyone for your replies.

Just for curiosity sake who has ever hatched out a wheaten from Wade jeane line Black Copper. I mean hatched out by you not what you have heard.

This is the white undercolor and should not be there and if you breed this it will show up in the offspring. I just finished going through my entire flock and culled everything with the white undercolor.

Okay - took the plunge off the deep end this weekend and ordered some Bev Davis Marans from Greenfire - had some $ in my paypal account from some ebay selling...Wow it did sting just a bit but oh well . Looking forward to the spring when my babies should arrive. Did a prior thread to help me decide if I should start with what I really wanted and thoght of as the best so I went for it. Don't think I'll breed to sell but just to see what I can do. Ordering Ameraucanas from Paul Smith this week too...Hopefully gonna have a bunch of fuzzy butts to plough through next year - so excited already

- can't keep all 25 but hopefully will have a nice flock to start with of both breeds. Promised my husband we'd keep Laverne - my white rock. She's a solid layer.

Don, I'm not going to argue with you, and I get a bit perturbed at how you always have to infuse negativity in your posts.

I was trying to be helpful to a newer member.

For sure, post your opinion..but please be respectful about it. I don't feel like that's asking too much. What good will it do for you to post a question on how many have hatched wheatens from the W. Jeane line when anyone who has done ANY amount of research knows it to be a fact that this line carries a recessive wheaten gene? I for one have hatched wheatens from W. Jean birds. Not many, but I have hatched them - and, from a VERY reputable breeder, I might add. In California, NOT in Florida, BTW.
