It would be a good discussion and I would love to see it - - - BUT everyone has to agree to be NICE . .. . .

Don,

Such things as an extra point in comb, sparse shank feathering, maybe even lighter or darker eye (although I tend to be an eye freak!). In an otherwise outstanding bird, I believe there would be more good passed on than bad. Especially when bred to a bird that compliments or has none of those faults.

I agree.

As far as shank feathering - from what I have been told, it should run all the way down the shank and the outside toe without a break in feathering. I think so long as it does, whether it's very light or very heavy should not be any deduction either way. I could be wrong, but this is how I interpret it.

My input on the subject at hand.....

I WILL breed a bird that may have a fault (depending on the fault) in my mind if the bird has more good qualities to lend that out weighs the fault, I'll work with it........I've got nothing but time and in no hurry to get to the finish line with these birds. If I don't like the outcome..........I SIMPLY CULL the offspring and don't make those crosses anymore.

WOW!!!!!!!! I can only imagine what he and the girls will produce. I don't know which I like better you are very blessed with two outstanding Roos. I will get a picture or two of my birds (hopefully) this weekend would like to know if I am even in the right ballpark. I believe I am a bit intimidated.

Debbi, I agree 100% and we should worry about the type before worrying about the other stuff. I never been afraid to breed a bird with faults if it is something that I can control.

I don't fight over stuff like that! I pick my battles, and do so carefully. I do what has worked for me in other breeding plans that worked in the past. Some may not agree, but I follow my own drummer, and my gut. To each his own. What bothers one person and really is seen as a bad fault, may not be the other person's idea of all that bad. Sometimes, you just HAVE to do something, otherwise, you'll never know. Besides, until someone else is paying for my food and raking the coop, well, nuff said!

Hi Pink~ sorry about the pic of Marshmellow, when I went in to fix it the pic was gone from my uploads?! But, I fixed it!
He thanks you all for the nice comments! He is quite a looker! He knows it too, he avoids getting his feathers ruffled as much as possible. He has his evil henchman, Cosmo doing the dirty work for him while he naps with the girls. I'll definately post more pics! When I need a break from my daily routine I go to BYC, when I need a break from the stuff I am learning on BYC, I go out and take pictures. I also go take pictures of them for reference, it is easier to see the attributes being discussed when they are not moving around!!! Either way I usually end up in the yard with the camera! I think I have more pictures of chickens than my kids!

Anybody see what I mean about the blackness? It isn't the same black as my Australorp, or even the same black as in his wing and tail, at least it doesn't seem uniform?

All of my Marans have exactly the same amount of feathering on their legs that they had at hatch. It seems like the feathers that are there now are more developed than the earlier ones, so they appear more feathery than they did as chicks, maybe that is what confuses people?
