Illia~

They are lovely boys!!!!!

Of course they have to stand in the muckyiest part of the run, isn't that what they all do? It wouldn't be any fun if we didn't have to trek through 4 inches of slippery thick brown chicken poop smelling ooze would it? Come on you know you missed it over the summer!!!!!!

I am soo putting some of my pure blue pullets in with one of my wheaten guys! Gosh it looks like you have a ton of roosters. Your place must sound like my place in the morning! Mine all start around 6 am or sometimes even earlier if the train goes by and whistles which really sets them all off lol.

I turned the 11 juvenile BCM loose in the outdoor pen yesterday & then sat there watching them for about an hour. When they came out of the brooder I put them in a closed chainlink pen to grow & that they did but they were pretty enclosed. Yesterday was their first real experience with the totally "outside" world. They were sooooo funny running around checking everything out. I can really see them better now. Most of them will go to the laying pen as will one of the hens they came from............way too much copper, but I think a few of them will be worth working with. Now if I can get some decent color eggs from them. I have 3 more younger ones coming up that are too much younger to be with these for now. One of those seems almost all black.....I can't figure it all out but it sure is fun trying....LOL

Where are all the Black Copper Marans without white in tail, wing and undercolor. I have heard it said that the BC is ready to be excepted by the APA. I would just like to see some of these BC that are ready to be accepted by the APA especially the Male Black Copper young or old. I really need to see these so I know that it is possible to breed one or two. I have plenty of females but am just wondering since they are supposed to be good enough to go into the Standard of Perfection where are the male Black Copper. I believe it takes like 45-50 real consistant birds to be approved by APA let us see some of them before February. I might just get some blue splash males and breed blue copper marans, bet it would be much easier. Lets see some of the BC female with dark soft feathering below the vent.

Don, I think there are plenty out there. I've seen several shown in this thread alone. And - as for mine, every one of my hens has charcoal colored feathering on their bums. I specifically breed for solid black chests (though not all 100% of my hatchlings have that - as evidenced by Illia's boy from me!), and I believe that goes hand in hand with the charcoal bums on the hens...I could be wrong, though! Those experiments that I hatched out were just that; it's not a mating that I "endorse" or that I actually partake in for my bred pens, just a "side breeding" if you will, just to see what I'd get.

In breeding for the solid black chests on males, I did end up hatching about half of the females with little to NO copper hackles. I've only kept the ones with the copper hackles (obviously). I do think it will take time, but there are plenty of folks, IMO, who have the "right" colored birds to get the proposed standard approved. Once approved, I believe (maybe I'm naive) that we will see more & more PROPER colored Marans.

The qualifying meet for the BC's is in Feb. There needs to be 50 GOOD BC's to pass the test. The 50 birds need to be an equal mix of C,H,K,P....so 25 cocks/cockerels of Good type and color are needed to pass. I won't be there, but the qualifying judge is scheduled to be Pat Malone of TX. Past President of the APA. The current President of the APA and former member of the APA Standard Revision Committee will also be present to oversee the meet. This will not be an automatic acceptance of the variety....they will have to be of good type and color. Males and females. I would guess that there will be plenty of pics available after the judging.
