How is the undercolor under the hackle feathers I hope no white. Best angle of tail I have seen on a BC marans male here on BYC. Is there any white feathers in wing and tail. If he doesn't have have white he looks super nice and would like to own a few just like him. Don

MA, Wait for a few of them to dry, then put them in the brooder. 95* for the first few days, with room to get away from the heat source. And, make sure to show at least one of them where the food and water is!

I am READY ! I got the kiddie swimming pool set up with heat lamps. I got water and food READY and waiting !
We tested the heat lamps last night - - they are at the right height for the right temp.

I would not take the early hatcher out this morning because I didn't want it to be LONELY! Now, at least three have hatched.
How long do you think it takes for them to dry enough to take out of the incubator?

We usually let them in there for atleast 24 hours, I know they can go no more than 3 days without food and water beacuse they are absorbing the rest of the yolk sac. It also depends on how quick they dry out and how many eggs you have in the incuator and how much room too. On a few bigger hatches we had, it got crowed after awhile and the hatched ones liked to play bowling with the eggs! Good luck and pictures please

That makes sense since the two blacks look really different. The French seem to use BC and brown red as if it was one color when they talk about the Marans.
Thanks!

Oh there is NO WAY I will make it 24 hours. . . There are just too many eggs in there !
I took three out. There are another 3 in there that are still too wet or weak. I saw on egg piping. ALL so far are delawares. . .
NOT A MARANS in sight! OMG - - what are they waiting on CHRISTMAS ? ? ? ?

Patience is definitely not my virtue !

Villagechicken.. I do not believe that to be the case.. Nothing I have seen or read about supports that theory... But please do ask.. It is an intense question and it will be interesting to hear the response. I will do some extra looking as well..... If you were stacking color then you would be able to produce darker when crossing light to dark and it would stack instead of even out.... That is what I am thinking..

Congrats on the new hatchies!!! YAY... more babies to love!!!!!!!

Well I guess the best thing to do is let them dry in the incubator until mostly dry and they are up moving around pretty good. I know that sometimes the hatched chicks act as incouragement to the ones trying to get out! I know what you mean about patience, I have 3 kids plus myself and DH that all watch the fun!

Wynette, I think what you are thinking about is the white under color, white in wing and tail is a good indicator that there is wheaten in house. We should never try and breed the copper glints out of the breast as it will as it will destroy the neck and saddle color.

Agreed Snowbird

Here is a theory for everyone... Go to the corners of the universe with this... It is so common that the most ugly genetic mess has the darkest eggs... So I wonder about genetic stacking and how that affects the egg color.... It is like there has to be wheaton and other genetic anomylies lying in the background to bring the number 8's.. Anyone got a working theory on this one???? What do you think Snowbird? Bev? Has it been possible to achieve a 8 in a bird with the wheaton removed???? Wynette would you ask Bev to address this question? maybe I am completely off base... anyone read anything in this regard chime in.

thanks.. got family here so I will try and play catch up this evening.

I have a couple questions.

1. I've been told that a bcm rooster can't cover but 2-3 hens. Is this true?

2. And someone tried to sell me eggs from Kevin Jean line.I haven't seen that lune on here. I've seen wade jeane. But they said kevin Jean was highly sought after.
