My daughter's boyfriends had to put up with Dobermans and German Shepherds, and a gun-toting mama! Slowed them down...a bit

So, are we talking pen breeding with one roo and lots of hens OR more than one roo and lots of hens ? ??

Morning Math!

Yes, pen breeding is with one roo or possibly 2 (depending on the size of the flock) over lots of hens.

The reason I ask is because I have the one roo and many hens ( 4 of which are marans). When I started collecting eggs for hatching, I went out there every 30 - 60 minutes and collected eggs. That way I knew which hen was laying which egg. Then I labeled the eggs and bagged them according the mother. That way when they hatched, I was able to track which chicks are from which hens.

This was labor intensive but it is not like I have to do it everyday. Only when I am collecting for a hatch. In my case, I will probably only hatch chicks twice a year.

We have used a video cam in their coops before - - -
I could probably use that to let me know when they are sitting and that would save me from constantly checling on them . . .

I ended up hatching out 19 chicks. Not to shabby for a first time hatching in a homemade incubator.

I had one chick who would not eat or drink from day one of hatching. It finally died yesterday (7 days old). All the others are strong and healthy. They are eating me out of house and home and HAVE DOUBLED THEIR SIZE in one week!

I tooked the stuffed animals out of the pool and have stacked a couple of small logs in there. They are jumping off of them and flapping their wings like CRAZZZZY! We made a fence of chicken wire around the pool to help keep the little ones in there. So far so good.

I need to get going on a new coop and run for these guys. The flock I started with last Dec. has maxed out my old coop and run space. Dh is putting the roof on my Gazebo this weekend and hopefully we can start the coop next weekend.

I think they will be able to stay in the pool for 1 more week (2 weeks total) I have a BITTY CAGE outside that I can put them in for an additional 2 - 3 weeks.

So, hopefully, I can get their coop ready for them by then.

Thanks! I have been wanting to make that my avatar for the longest time. My sister gave me a collection of old wildlife magazines and this was always my favorite photo.
I have had many of my favorites blown up and framed. Here is that photo but just a little bigger.
