Just me, and I have yet to have any breeding experience, but...
I would think that the melanizer would be the harder of the two to breed out. Just because it is more dominant. Breeding one with less melanizer to one with more, MAY give you at least some corrects.
As for the tail, I would much rather deal with a squirrel tail than with the white. Seems the white can keep popping up if perpetuated. Breed a high tail/short back to a longer backed female, and you MAY have a fix. JMHO!
Onthespot I am the opposite.. I would rather work on conformation first and not worry about the color balance until the conformation of the bird was there.. then the color balance can be worked over a couple generations.. I found the white feathers not to be that big of a hurdle if you use a bird with enough melaniser to begin with.. I don't cull bird as juveniles with white and I still don't have a production problem from one generation to the next.. this is just me...Others do it different.
Sorry.... can't eat my birds.... I send em out for finishing and butcher.
That is just not FAIR. Cpartist and I BOTH live on the EAST COAST. We both appreciate the fine lines of this roo. I need a better roo ! Are you sure your friend couldn't be talked into helping some fellow hobbyist out ? ? ? ?
I would keep any info in PM me totally PRIVATE - - - I PROMISE

I haven't been able to eat mine yet either. I have sent 6 off to freezer camp
, but gave them away. I have 18 cockerels and can't keep them all. I just don't want them to go to waste and this is the last weekend before spring the place I take them is open.
I have pimped my roosters out before...When I was breeding blue Cochins I would quarantine and single mate for my students... I haven't pimped out Charlie.. To worried about the loss...Couldn't take it... He isn't as pretty as the rooster I posted but I love him just the same... He produces good offspring...
My Charlie... I haven't posted a pic in a while... His comb used to look a lot like Don't bird as a youngster but the frostbite took the tips off... I was sick during he most of last winter and He suffered... I feel bad...Didn't know if he would be able to breed after the frostbite on his feet and comb. I am better prepared.. We don't usually have bad winters here..... I was caught off guard and had H1N1... It is as bad as they said it was... AT LEAST.
Geebs You think about it and let us know. I think cpartist has the wade thing going on, but he is so pretty I might even cross over . . . .
cpartist Remind me of how many chicks you hatched this last time around . . . . .
The one maran with that brown spot still has it. I've got it sexed as a male and it came from your black hen(s).
I can not tell yet how many of the chicks will be black from the blue hen(s). Any idea how long it takes for the blue to really show up? ?
I only had 2 chicks from my blue hen. The one chick is the bluest I have ever seen. The other is dark black. So, the difference is clear.
I have some chicks with really BLACK foot feathering. Others have a whiteish foot feathering. Is the white an indicator that they will be Blue copper marans ? ? If not, will the white molt out as the get in their real feathers?
Perhaps, PINK can give me an opinion too, seeing as she is the BLUE QUEEN!
