math Ace.. I think the white is a melaniser issue..I would watch it...In fact photograph it.. and see if it changes... Sometimes the color just has to "bloom" on the bird.

I like both the Davis and the Wade... but I kept only one line... the Wade.... so the temptation is sooooo THERE!!!!

Do you know if Don made it to the show in Ohio??? He is close enough... he might have gone.. It cost too much this time of year for me... I would have loved to go... (just to watch of course)

I did some last year ranging in age from 16-22 weeks. The youngest did not have as much meat, but were more tender than the older.
These were good as fryers, the older I used for chicken pot pies. The Marans were more tender and had a "smoother" texture than the
Buff Orps I proccessed at the same age.

I did have a bit of a hard time processing birds I've raised as chicks...and it was a lot of work for the amount of meat.

I've a local lady that has been buying my culls for a small amount lately...she free ranges them to protect her layers,
and I feel blessed for this.

Dealing with cull roo's is the most difficult part of raising poultry, IMO...the cull girls are easy to rehome as layers.

Ya or if ya have good roos like my friends on the east coast.. I would be easy.. LOL as for me.. My friend pastures them.. finishes them off and butchers ... she splits them with me... Nice deal for me.. She is very humane...

I have another buddy down here that caponizes his birds... I am talking him into giving us a class...that way the birds would get more mass.. More tempting to butcher... I might eat all the good looking ones too.... They would tremble when I went to the coup... heck Charlie might just start looking finger lickin good!

Thanks Geebs.

Any idea about when I should be able to tell the Black copper marans from the blue copper marans chicks ? ?

The eggs were from a Blue copper marans hen x Black Copper marans roo.
The stats say I should expect 50% Blue Copper and 50% Black Coppers with the chicks.

These little ones were born 2 weeks ago. On my first batch, I know I could tell my 4 weeks which were which. Should I be able to tell now (at 2 weeks) too ? ? ?

The blue look blue and the black look black... that simple... some times you get really nice dark ones when you cross using a black bird on a blue bird.. really nice to do this once in a while to keep good lacing.. If you can't tell em apart.. you have some really dark ones...

where are the pictures??

Can you find me the post... would love to hear what he thought... He is after all he is a showman!!
