Debbi, make the trip worthwhile and pick up some bird seed or some Boss... that make a Wally trip worth it... I hate Wally world... The place is a catacomb....... a proverbial miriad of places to get lost and my eyes go wacky under those flashing flurescent bulbs... I use phone a friend just to get there... If I am not out in 20 minutes, send a rescue swimmer!!! I like Whole Food Market... they have real food. Go look at the hydrometers....(for your bator) and get a candy thermometer for your bator... He he... (survival tips)
Oh ya...and Hi Don... How was the Holiday?? Eat lots of stuffed bird??? I agree to the picture desire here!!!
Partridge Rocks are supposed to go broody when they are 2 yrs old mine are the same age as the BC pullet who is setting they have not tried setting yet. I have a silkie who is wanting to set born in May but I don't need her right now next month is when I need her so I don't know so far my BC's are wanting to set the most as I have another one in with the silkie...I'm putting them in the wire bottomed cage to break them tomorrow.
OEGB too. I've seen them brood an ant trap. Why it was in their nest box, beyond poor husbandry.
I would like to have several broody-prone hens and I think I'll get them all bantams - lower operating costs. A hen raising chicks naturally is something everybody should have a chance to witness.
Well, it turns out the blue and black and the BCM are laying! And, my exchequer leghorn gave us our first white egg today! Whichever (blue or black) marans started laying this weekend, had smaller pullet sized eggs, not like the BCM that started out with extra large sized eggs. Now, I just need to reduce our flock. If anyone is in Los Angeles and is interested in a silkie male ours just crowed this morning.

newhen,
Are you sure the middle egg in the top row is not from one of the blues? I have had some that look like that from my blues. I am very interested in following the progression of your blue and black birds..

I vote for the Silkies, Mine have been great setters, but then I don't have the other breeds except for my new Delawares & they are young layers so I have no experience with them going broody.
I bought my silkies jsut for brooding.
