Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

All my marans crow alot. They crow loud. They crow often and just for the hell of it. Then again, I have way too many roos and it becomes like a competition in the yard. I think I should move all the pens to just one area so at least all the crowing comes from one direction LOL. As it is, it is like a sound-off every morning and several times a day.

I've got five cockerels, the oldest is about 5 1/2 months. Only two of them crow in the morning when let out of the coop, and it's only about ten crows for each. Unless the older cockerel gets stressed, they only crow in the morning! The other 3 cockerels all have crowed at one point, but the two are the alphas so they are the only ones being heard for right now. These are the quietest roos I've ever had. That said, that may all change when they get older, but the one is breeding now, so I doubt it. Personally, I like to hear them crow, wish they would crow more!

I have been putting the chicklets (13 weeks) in with the big guys for about a month now. Tonight, got the wild hair to leave the seperate pen door open on their part of the coop so they can integrate in the morning. Keep your fingers crossed for me that all goes well when they awake in the morning, and that my chicklets fare well with the big bullies! My best boy, Roy, took the highest part of the roost when I let them free in the coop, while most of the bigger chooks take the medium roost. We'll see how it goes in the morning!
