I will say that it has been my experience that the darkest eggs come from the birds that do not show enough color and have some mossy going on. All birds that I have that are too dark lay the darkest eggs, all birds that I have that are more correct all have laid

Yes...me too. My girls in the breeding pen do not hold their egg color as long as the dark girls (the darkest and most mossy). The dark girls also hold better egg color during their molt than the more correct birds.

Mossies are making a comeback!!! LOL

I do have a couple proper colored hens but they started mossy... you can't tell now and the coloring on the neck is too red... The conformation was uphill...it has taken 2 crosses to change the back angle... the egg color is okay but not like it was in the mutly looking darkie mamas.

Will disclose some info. here I have four colors, white, BC, wheaten, and cuckoo and they all lay good dark color eggs. Just to get a little dialog going what makes the other three stay dark if the mossy and Loud colored BC make their egg darker. Now if we look at some of the darker eggs like BHB and Ruth have their female have plenty of color and there must be some kind of connection somewhere. I will say also that I only set the #6 or better colored eggs. Just looking for a common denominator or any info. that will speed up the process. Now I am not a genetic person with formulas and do not intend to be in the future. So does anyone have any info. Don
