Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ok not the best picture in the world. Chickens move around too much.

Anyway, I have been wanting to post a picture of my guy for a while now. He is a beauty. I don't have any girls yet, so I am definitely not running a breeding program. He is a gentle Rooster and big and loud.

He has the toe feather. He doesn't have any stray red feathers on his chest or other areas. Anyone pick out good or bad things about him? Just curious.

He is my $3.00 maran chick.

Heather ~ Personally, I'd find a better rooster. The roo you have pictured does have a "squirrel tail", set above the 45* angle; also he has a not too nice comb: too many points, and not evenly serated. He is also too dark, as in too many melanizers. His saddle feathers (back) should be the same color as his hackle feathers, and he should have some dark red feathering in his shoulders. He also appears to not have any (or sufficient) shank/toe feathering. The pullets/hens you have pictured with him seem to have no or little coppering in their hackles; this roo sure won't help to solve that problem in the next generation. Just my opinion, some others may also chime in with a different opinion.

mammaperraca: It is hard to tell the merits of this bird from the picture. Can you take another one or two that shows us a little more... There is no possible way to give an assessment from what I see here. Thanks.

Ivy~

Here is one of my GFF pullets that has nice coppering in her neck, she could use a little more copper on the top near and around her eyes and head and maybe a smidge more down the front of her neck, but other than that......her copper is the best copper I have had on a pullet. Please excuse her dark eyes, but regardless of her eye color this girl will be used for breeding. Females should not have copper on their breasts, breasts should be black.

Hope this helps.

crazyforchicks!!!!

Congratulations on your eggs! They are pretty, don't be to worried about the color, since this is your first dozen sometimes they will darken up a bit and it is very hard to get photo's to portray egg color accurately. Give them a little more time and see if they don't darken a little. Do you have photos of the kiddos to share with us???? We can never see too many photos of birds, chicks or eggs here.

What a pretty hen. Most of my hens don't have much coppering. Its something I need to work on. I really prefer them with less but have decided I should try to get more in. I only have on mossy girl out of all of them. Wish I could say that about the roos LOL.

Thanks! I am working on copper as well. My longterm goal (or should I say on the top of my "I wish" list

) is to produce a very nice BCM male out of Bill and his daughters from Davis birds and nice females from Gnarles crossed with Bill's daughters and my pure Davis girlz. I like Gnarles' dtr's better than his son's and like all of Bill's offspring the best. Who knew my favorite would end up being a rooster that I have virtually no lineage history on.
