Chickens coming out your ears!

I was just checking on the bator, when my dog starting barking hysterically. Thought maybe bambi had made his way to the front yard again, but looked out the front window, and there was a buggy coming down the driveway. It was Daniel, the Amish man who had helped to build the coop this summer. He had the whole family with him, even Grandma. Had to give the women the tour of the coop and chooks. Dan was impressed with how much they had grown. His wife Sarah was envious, (on a Sunday no less

) of the outside nest boxes, she'd never seen that before. I told her to put Daniel to work on that one...I think I got an Amish stink eye from him!

The weather is in the upper 30s today, so they were all out for a Sunday drive. Told him to ask some of the other men if they want to start on the big coop, said he would ask. At least we may get the coop built, the fencing will probably have to wait till spring, unless we get a stretch of warm weather and the ground thaws. Nice to see them all, it was quite a nice suprise. Need to get to know his Grandma, she was probably in her 80s, and sounded like a real hoot! Fiesty for sure

Ohhh those eggs are beautiful you didn't show me those wow I might have to get a few.

Karen's rooster is a big lovely boy and those eggs I saw were at the end of laying had nice shape so the egg color me thinks is fine and the hens are huge but one is Miss Mossy the other one has lovely color balance if I could have gotten them in my rental car without Karen noticing well....Karen has a nice pairing with the two I suggested single mating those and I was in line for chicks or eggs when she had enough those are some big beefy birds just the way I like them and the pullets she hatched were split in coloring like the hens some perfect and some with a lot of mossy going on.

I want to thank all of you for your kind words........... Crafting has been a mainstay in my life. I gets so much out of it & can do it year round no matter what the weather or breeding season. I am thinking of doing the eggs all year & having a Christmas line & an Easter line. There are a couple of specialty shops that may be interested. Up til now it has always been a word of mouth individual sale basis for any thatI have extra.
Kristie, I asked you awhile back what your favorite chicken was I think. I haven't worked out a good image of what I think a Marans needs to be yet but I keep fine tuning what I have. Everybody keep those pictures coming & I may get it yet. As soon as I get some extra Marans eggs I will use them & see what I can come up with. I have an idea in mind already

SO I went to the local Farmers Union and got some gallimycin (Erythromycin). It was a truly small town experience. It is one of those farm stores where everything is dusty and crowded, a tabby cat stocking mice in the pet food isle. At the counter in, no hurry to wait on the next person in line, was the manager talking to a captive audience about buying 20 chickens for his wife. He pegged me at 8 feet away as the woman who had called about the sneezing chickens. After helping me get what I needed, plus some stuff I didn't need, he went back to help the people waiting in at the cash-register. He shook his head, as I explained that I had just received 4 chickens in the mail from Florida, and they were the ones sneezing. He asked what I could possible want that came from Florida? I told him Black Copper Marans, and he new of the birds. Said I could order chicks form him in the spring if I wanted.. "nothing fancy mind you but good chicks non the less". As he finished ringing me up, after convincing me I needed a treat block for the chooks..... He asked me, taking off his leather cowboy hat....."Tell me who I look like and I will give you 10% off" One look and I was sure of the answer he was after.... "Santa Claus" I told him, and got my 10% off. Put a smile on his face and a little bit more xmas spirit in my day!
