Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Bikechick and all:

POTATO CANDY

1- peeled, medium sized russet potato. Boil until almost falling apart. Drain and put in mixing bowl

1- Bag of powdered sugar

Mix some powdered sugar with the potato a little at a time. Keep adding sugar until it is very hard to stir, and the potato has absorbed all it can. This will be a LOT of the bag of sugar!

Roll out the mixture like a pie crust on wax paper or baking sheet. Fill with a thin layer of your favorite filling. Don't use a watery/juicey type of filling. We used to use peanut butter, or jams/preserves, almond paste, stuff like that. Roll the crust up like a cheese log, and put in the fridge for about an hour to set. This is the hard part, cause everyone wants it now!

When it's done setting up, take it out and slice like a cheese log, and serve. Super sweet!!!

I am ready to treat, but will hold off one more day to see how the roo does. The hen got better so fast I figure it might not be too serious. I will continue with the turmeric, and cinnamon eggs, the cranberry sauce and yogurt, and the vitamins and electrolytes in the water. But I am ready to give the gallimycin if the roo does not show improvement.

Never tried Nutella, but I bet that would be good. There are all kinds of things you could put in there, my favorite was Apricot jam and smooth peanut butter...yummmm

My chooks love the oatmeal too!!!

NOPE! I have been EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED in the marans egg production. I have 1 bird that hasn't laid an egg in 6 months. I have another bird that lays 1 egg every two weeks. Lastly, I have 2 girls that lay really good when they are laying. However, they have decide that they need a winter vacation. It started a month ago.

I am talking NO EGGS from 4 birds in over a MONTH. Every one else is pulling their own weight, but these slackers. They may need to be renames - - breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert if they don't start laying soon.

Maybe the three breeds I keep to specialize in will be Delawares, speckled sussex and partridge rocks - - - -

I REALLY don't see the point in chickens that don't lay eggs. . . . .
I live in FLORIDA - - REALLY, should they be complaining about my weather ? ? ?

NOW, I betcha you are wishing you hadn't asked

You can BUY potato candy here at the store here in Hungary. It's still the poor man's candy in some places. The recipe sounds WAY better than the stuff you get at the store here. It kinda tastes like bit-o-honey with wax mixed in.

My BCM pullet hatched in May finally put one where it belongs, in the nest box. Wasn't even paying attention and thought it was one of my ISA brown's eggs (it was dark in the henhouse) until I came inside and voila, there it was!

That's dark chocolate covered peanuts my wife was working on for Christmas gifts, next to it. Not super dark, but only her 3rd egg, and the darkest one so far. (The hen's not my wife's

Sorry. That's frustrating. I've had to buy eggs for the last 2 months WT?

I've spent more $ feeding and not getting anything than buying eggs. Oh well, I'll be patient a little longer.
Funny, I was going to PM you and ask if you had hatching eggs for sale, for my dh will be going to Jacksonville in the next few months. You know of anyone in your area w/ Blue, Blue Wheaten Marans eggs or Lavender Ameraucanas?

Nice egg Villagechicken!

This candy tastes way better than bit-o-honey, and has no waxy taste! Don't think I'd recommend it for a diabetic though!

It is reeeeally sweet! Learned the recipe from an old farmer out here. They couldn't afford soda, so his mom would make this to ease the sweet tooth urge, back in the 40s.

Flagardengirl is right down the street from me and has different types of marans and from different good sources - - - I know she is not breeding right now - - - but may be then.

Cpartist is not that far away, maybe an hour, and she has Ameraucanas - - really pretty ones. Although, I think they are wheaton ameraucanas. Her girls are laying up a storm.

Those would be the two local contacts that I would recommend PM ing
