How old is the hen? She looks like a cuckoo marans. Maybe she is nesting on someone elses egg? All my pullets are starting to lay. I watched my Golden Lace Wyandotte lay a tiny almost pink egg, well the other day a cuckoo was nesting so we walked away to let her do her stuff. When she came out there was a tiny pink egg, I knew it wasn't hers she was just nesting on it. My cuckoos have given me a few eggs that are med brown to dark brown, since they are just starting to lay they are laying very small eggs. I do have 1 cuckoo that layed 2 light colored eggs at a time, that was odd. After 3 times of that every other day it stopped. I'm now getting a very dark jumbo egg every other day but the yoke is like another egg not fully developed inside. It is weird their 1st couple of weeks just starting out.

I think one of my sex links (golden comet) lays a darker egg than some of the hatchery cuckoos. She lays a pretty dark egg for a sexlink though.

im told shes about 8 months so she probably hasnt been laying long, would the stress of a new home make her lay a light egg? for a day or so? she could just be curious and getting in and out of the box, i have 3 boxes and they all wait for the big box lol

Yes some won't even lay for a few weeks after moving to a new home so she might just be sitting on someone else's egg. I would just watch her for a week or so and see what happens.
I brought home some key west chickens from a rescue and one didn't lay for @ two and a half weeks and the other 3 hens still haven't laid yet lol.

i checked again when i penned them up for the night and one of my red girls seems to have gone broody...or she really likes the box lol so i think that the marans was the one who skipped laying an egg today

so excited to get my first marans egg!!! i have 11 BCM in the brooder but they are a ways off from laying

These are my breeding pens . The covered top is a 4 foot by 4 foot fruit bin turned upside down. There is a roost & shelf up in it that has a nestbox on it that I can access from the door on the side of the top. The top of the outside run area in the front is hinged & opens to get to the waterer. This is a total recycle project. I took apart pallets & bought used fruit bins to make them. My hinges & brackets were the most expense.

Yes Denny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am definitely going to the Stockton Show. I think it is on the 29th. Kristin (Harris) & I are planning on meeting up. I think I know several people wanting to go. My grand daughter's 4H poultry group has 22 kids & I know some of those families are interested in going too. I am close enough to drive back & forth each day. So I can go anytime you want to.
