Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

When it dries out here I can separate out for egg collecting... The only ones I have separated is Charlie and his girls He could have the blue pullet...

Is she average size for your girls Pink??? I will try to get a pic of her today beside the Gherke girls. I may throw her in with Charles to see if I can get her eggie... I will have to trade out one of his hens... She is positive for copper on the neck though you can barely see it... I think either rooster could throw an eye on her... Charles is smaller of the two roosters even though he is the oldest.

I gave you a Blue Copper pullet......where is she hiding out?

You could cross her with your Willhe and see what happens, I bet your boy would help with eye color in the offspring as her eyes are dark and I think he would help out with hackle color.

not me! But if you want to give me a pullet I am all for it!

I know...sorry! But I do know that if I ever needed to rehome any of my birds that they all have homes. Now to get them used to a knapsack and teach them to read a map, I can't ship them, so they will have to hoof it.

Jan getting the pullet was a last minute thing......Jan and I just happened to be talking on the phone the same morning that another dear BYC friend was at my house picking up some hatching eggs, Jan needed the pullet and he was gracious enough with no prior knowledge of possibly transporting a bird, he drove her to Jan on his way home which is about 2 hours from me. LoL, Jan even got a nice fresh egg that she had just laid as well. I'll bet Jan ate that egg.

GUilty as Charged.... It was delicious.. I got two eggs from her in that morning... Did I tell you that??? She laid one in the box on the way over and another by morning... Wierd... but cool... and it was a TWO EGG BREAKFAST!!!!!

Ya some gal got a pair from me (so she said) and needed to trade back the rooster for a hen... I got a hen from Pink to make the trade and the gal never came over... I think now she was pulling my leg!! She was trying to "keep" the rooster and rehome it with a friend she said....Hmmmmmm I believed it and at the last minute told her that I wanted the rooster back so bring it and I would give her a hen.... I think she was trying to get a free hen... Well that didn't work out for her... I got he free hen!!! LOL.... Pink knows she is welcome to have her back or whatever she wants but she is being a stinker about taking anything for it... Hey how about a marans mug Pink... Can I order you a mug for coffee??? I need an address.... Do you have one yet??

Ya think we can get Lenster to go to VT... ha ha.... (kidding) I hear through the birdvine that you got some bators from him....

Have you taken them for a spin??? Pictures please....

She is somewhat on the smaller side than her siblings, she is pure Davis, Charmins sister matter of fact just a couple months older, but I do have bigger Davis girls than her, don't know why she ended up clean legged, both parents are feather legged, her eye color didn't bother me as I could have worked with that and she lays a nice egg, but I didn't want to keep anymore birds than necessary that were clean legged. That said, if you are looking to add size......let's see what I get, because I just put a GFF BC pullet in with Bill. She is the one that has dark eyes but beautiful copper in the hackles and she is the biggest of the 2 largest GFF pullets.

I have NOTHING show worthy. My hens were hatched in an incubator that had temp / humidty issues. The result is some crooked toes. The babies from these hens are JUST fine. My roo has white feather issues - - a DQ. The next generation - - - might give me something to show off.

My delawares are only 8 weeks old. They are from a good breeder, so I may have something to show at next years show.

I have been talking to Dh and our plan for this year is to
1.) finish locating our foundation stock for the Speckled susex, delawares and marans.
2.) Build our coops for the new flocks . . .
3.) Spend the year maturing and culling for the best possible offspring.
4.) Get NPIP certified this year too

We are going to get a start on the new coops today. The Gazebo is NOT finished yet, but my November hatch can not wait for new coops any longer.
I have another hatch in the incubator now. I was very HAPPY with the blue color on my one blue chick from the last hatch. Dang shame he has side sprigs on his comb

His color is nice, shape is nice and personality is wonderful.

NOpe...no size wanted!!! I lke the smaller ones... I considered this a bonus.. Clean legged is fine too.. Charles throws feathers on everything... Wilhe's all had feathers too... No biggy... I would rather have bald legged hens and the offspring have feathers... Works for me!!!! I actually may have hatched some of hers... (test hatch)... They are nice and dark and blend in so well with the Black coppers as she is such a nice darkie layer... I really like her for size... I owe ya something Pink... I have plans for that hen. If it works out... I will share the outcome... It will be a while yet...This fall I may have something fun.

I thought about the NPIP but that would mean I couldn't get eggs from anyone not NPIP... that would mean no eggies from Pink if I wanted some!!! (NO FAIR) or from any of the other not NPIP bycers.. Can't bring myself to do it.

Gotta go make coffee!!! BRB

I don't need her back Jan.......I have ENOUGH birds right now and eggs in lockdown. And you're right about me being a stinker and it will stay that way. No you didn't tell me about the 2 egg day, lucky you!!!!!!!

Yes I bought one of his sportsmans....put wheels on it yesterday and it is in postition.........waiting for DH to run a new electrical line for it, he thinks it is best that we put it on it's own breaker in the panel. That new line won't happen today as we promised my parents that we would go cut wood for them today. Dad says it's a small job........."only 'bout 10 cords or so....shouldn't take ya long"............ummmmm, ok!?!?!?! I have 36 eggs collected for it so far.

You need to borrow my son... really... Wood to chop... Man is he a oakaholic... He loves to split wood... He is such a handsome worker too... Let me know. I would ship him up to you for wood splitting... He would run on up there too!!!! 10 cords.. Uh that is a weeks worth of work...
