Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Nice eggs! Your dd is gonna go nuts with all those little fuzzy butts running around pretty soon!

Ginasmarans: Pretty Cuckoos and nice eggs too! I have such a soft spot for barred birds!

I chased Cheepa's son around today with the camera. This is the young roo from my Avatar egg pic. His father also comes from a very dark egg. I at least want to use him for my dark egg layer pen. His tail is way too high and his back is too short. I could breed him back to Cheepa (his mother because she has a long back and normal tail) and see if I can get any chicks with lower tails and longer backs and lay dark eggs....I think he will be a big boy when he is full grown. He is really sweet and follows me like a puppy dog. I kinda like his coloring even though his chest is pure black and not with "parsimonious copper". He doesn't have a name yet lol.
This is the egg he came from:

I think you should name him "Chocolate Chip" and call him "Chip" for short. Looks like he has a nice broad chest....I love that!

Haha thats a good name I like it!

Lisa thanks for sharing pics of the shows. I'm shocked there were no Marans and just eggs! Geez we should take some of ours next year...show worthy or not

Pour on Cattle Ivermectin: 5 spots for average hen on the skin. Used for control of parasites. I use the name brand, not Durvet because it is more effective in the long run.

That's good to know-I have thought about getting some for the pens, I can find them at Menards here(like Lowes) which has them year round too! Is there flavors they like better than others or flavors to stay away from? I hear you on this-seems like we take on extra work to make sure everyone(animals included

) is taken care of properly, including our fosters.

Jan, does this include worms or just external parasites? Or do I have to give an injection for the worms?
Thanks

and I am assuming there is a withdrawal time....what is that and how long does it last?

So this would help with mites? We have 1 or 2 girls that seem to have problems and of course the boys too. Used frontline plus for dogs(but this would get costly) on all boys and non-laying girls but wasn't sure if we could eat the eggs if we did this to the laying hens?

I am pretty sure that there is no withdrawal time for eating the eggs. The Ivermectin stays in the system of the hen and continues to protect just like it does for parasites on dogs. There was someone on here that doses his birds every month. Isnt Frontline just Ivermectin anyway? You could use it for the dogs too. (I get bulk for mine right now) The only problem is that the pour on is expensive too...cause it comes in COW size!

Well at 36 my Husband is working on the santa look, but I think he has a few more years to get there. I am however still really struck by how similar your sons face is to what Jud looked like at that age. The biggest differance is Jud had a blond afro/mullet look going on with his hair, but I fell for him anyway.

but back to chickens..... I can't wait for my son to be old enough to build me a coop!

You sound so much like me. I hate house work. I'd much rather be outside working in the yard or "playing" with the animals. I can't complain about my boys at all though. I have 3 awesome sons. Radiation oncologist to-be, mechanical engineer and national guard. My only complaint is I wish I could see them all more! Holidays are just not enough!

Did you find your BJG's? I am considering separating my hens and roo and raising a few. Two of the hens are pretty nice, but one is small. One of the roosters has turned out pretty nice, and I think I will use him. They came from a hatchery that "claimed" the eggs came from an exhibition breeder. I don't know, but they are turning out nicer than I expected. They will be a year old in March. So if I get my breeder pens finished I may hatch a few.
