Hey Marans folks,
Not marans related, but today we ate our first backyard bird. Not a big deal probably for many, but for a kid who grew up in the burbs of SoCal, it was a huge step. But figured it was necessary if I was gonna somehow justify the feedbill for this amazingly fun hobby.

We help our neighbors haul firewood from time to time, and so she did all the dirty work, giving us a beautifully dressed out 14 wk BO/BR cross in a ziploc bag. It went way better than I expected. It was good. 19 month old DD couldn't get enough of it. I feel way better not feeding her "mystery meat" from the store that's been who knows where and fed who knows what.

We had deviled egg for lunch, so our main meals all came from the backyard today. Not exactly Charles Ingalls living off the land, but it was a good step.

Math, sorry it's so quiet here. Hope it's noisier there around your 'bator.

I am so GLAD that I seperated the OE eggs from the marans eggs. . .

Hatch count right now is . . . . .
2 marans and 2 OE.

The two Olive egger chicks look exactly the same as the marans chicks. I haven't taken them out of the incubator yet. I don't know if the Olive eggers have feathered legs yet. I can not believe how much they are sharing in coloring . .. . .

Did you post already what cross they are? Are they second gen EE or is one parent pure Ameraucana? When I hatched Australorps with BCM they looked alike except for shank feathering. Later on the Aussie shanks darkened up a lot more.

OMG - - I will need a prozac or something if this is the case. Should I start drinking WINE or ya-ya punch at 7:00 in the morning?
I am gonna need to pace myself if this is going to take 18 hours. I LEFT the house ALL day yesterday - - so that is not an option today!

Not at 7am... but of it is still going on now , about 6pm,,,go for the WINE!

I am good Now - - -there are 4 babies in there to see and a 5th is hatching now.

The Olive eggers are Easter Egger hen crossed with BCM roo.

This particular Easter egger hen gave me a chick this summer that looked Identical to her.
That chick came from EE hen paired with EE roo. Dang shame I don't have that roo any more.
The chick from that pairing is laying an even more Blue / green egg than the momma does. . . .

I checked the OE legs and guess what - - - THEY ARE FEATHERED Too! I swear this roo of mine could put feathers on a turtle's legs!

Hi Peeps,

Looking to have 12-18 BCM hatching eggs shipped to me around the middle of next week. Wanting quality birds with the right dimensions/coloring that lay a very dark egg. Please PM me if you can be of assistance. Thanks

I have a question for you Marans experts. My 4 BCMs are laying for around 2 months. The eggs are yet to weigh large. What is the average size for BCMS? And I have yet to get more than 2 per day. My GC's and RIR's put them to shame for size and numbers. Is this normal for the breed? Thanks for any responses.
