Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Day 21 has officially ended.
The total is 8 out of 20 eggs have hatched. # 9 is trying really hard, but did not make the 24 hour count down. . ..
My count may be skewed because there are two layers of eggs in the incubator. The top layer has 12 eggs and the bottom layer has 8 eggs in it. I can NOT get a good view of the bottom layer. So, there may be more that have hatched, but they are not hanging out where I can see them or their spilt egg shells

I've done such a better job on this batch.
The candling went better - - MUCH BETTER - - this time. I was able to see what I was suppose to see all three times they were candled.
The electronics were properly calibrated BEFORE starting this time. So, temps have been holding constant.
The humidity has not been an issue. I didn't remove or open the top of the incubator until the end of day 21, when 8 chicks had hatched.

I want to see want is on the bottom layer. . . . BUT I can not do that until the last OE hatches. If they were not separate, there is NO WAY I would of been able to identify them until the muffs, beards, or pea combs started showing up. # 9 - - trying to hatch right now - - is an OE. That leaves one more OE to hatch after that. . . .

Just darling! What is this cutie? My chicks are about the same age, but dark black, so maybe this is a ??? Marans?

Japman and HickoryGuy~
You may try looking in the Hatching Egg section of BYC, and also try looking up breeders on the Marans Chicken Club USA and the Marans of America Club, both have breeders lists and you should be able to find a breeder that is relatively close to you, so eggs don't have to be shipped too far. If you any troubles just pop back in here and let us know and someone will try and help you out.

Hi Robin!

I suspect that you will be noticing bigger eggs pretty soon, for pullets that have just started laying and only for around 2 months they are still considered new layers and they could very well still be working out their laying groove. I have noticed that with some of my girls it can take a few weeks to several to get to that bigger egg after they start laying. Hope this helps.

Look up Chronic Respitory Disease, Mycoplasmosis, Air Sac Disease and Infectious Bronchitis and see if any of these illnesses describe what your birds are experiencing. The Gallimycin is probably your best bet at this point. A couple of these illnesses can be brought on by stress and since your birds where shipped it may have triggered something. I hope they are feeling better soon.

The 3 boys that I grew out that all had white in the hackles and fluff at the tail break, I kept one and put him in the laying flock, he has wry tail and if it weren't for that I would be test mating him for breeding even with the white in the hackle that seems to be un-noticeable now at 6 mos old, but if I lift his hackle feathers, the white is still there. He will only be staying until my youngest Splash Copper roo is old enough to take his place. I noticed the white in mine about the same age you did with yours, it disappeared on the waaaaayyyy overly red boy by 6 mos, but the other 2 it didn't. They were well built, large sized birds and the 2 we put in the freezer dressed out very nice.
Give them some more time to see how they mature before tossing them out.

Are you sure we don't have Gophers around here Mel? My bestfriend has one huge Gopher looking thing that has burrowed his way right into the coop and has been visiting at night eating the feed, she finally got a good look at him the other night when she put her birds to bed. The holes that this critter is creating is bigger than any mole hole I've ever seen. I didn't think we had them either, but she says this critter is in no way a mole....she said he was almost as big as one of the Welsummer hens I gave her and had big eyes and short bushy tail. Gopher? I am going to take her my live trap so hopefully they can catch him and relocate him.
