Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I found someone on the internet that sells White Marans eggs or chicks. I'm going to order only a dozen eggs and try my hand at incubating for the first time. If it doesn't work I'll order chicks from him. His website is www.freewebs.com/norrusmarans/ He is in Ohio, the only person I've found so far with White Marans.

Lisa,
Glad the eggs made it safe. I liked the box/cooler combo, but was worried they might be a bit tight in there. Gee my eggs look soooo small next to yours. My hens are young, please tell me their eggs will get bigger?

I have a question for anyone that breeds/owns Cucko Marans....

I was "told" that you can auto sex chicks by their color. Greyish for roosters and black for females. Can anyone tell me if there is any truth in this?

Any info would be great and thanks

These are supposed to be golden and silver cuckos

Some are greyish, some black, I think 1or 2 has a brownish head. 1 is a wheaten color and 1 is white ???? I'm confused.

Guess I'll let them grow out a bit.

I have Cuckoos (Silver and Golden) and it's pretty easy to sex even single gene ones the spot is very small on the girls larger or more of a smudge on the boys. Boys are supposed to be lighter but when you are trying to improve what you have by using another color like Silver Birchen or Black for Cuckoos then you can have a single copy male if he was exceptional you could still use him on barred hens 50/50 chance of getting a double copy rooster or an unbarred pullet. The hardest ones to tell is when they have Wheaten mixed in can't see the spot......the chick is yellow. To me there is so much "stuff" color wise in some lines you just never know where is Geebs? she has some with interesting genetics as she has Birchens and I even think she has a Salmon from some of hers. To me now the first thing you must have is egg color for what is a Marans if it doesn't lay a chocolate egg? Color is the icing.....I'm still working on building the barn but I want cake...

. Yours are darker, so maybe with a little love connection I can get darker JUMBO eggs . . . That would be the BOMB !
