Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I've noticed something about my girls lately, and wondered if one or more isn't thinking about going broody? All of a sudden, at least 3 of the pullets are laying their eggs in the same nest box. Is this a sign of things to come?? I've never had any of them set yet, they are all lay and go, but why in the same nest?

#1 Pullet
#2 Cockerel ..is that one clean legged? Did it come from a Gnarles x BCM egg?
#3 Pullet
#4 I will say Pullet, but I am not 100% sure on this one.

Yes. #2 is clean and was a Gnarles hatch... He was the only black I suspected of possibly being a Roo

So, if you are right, I may be looking at: 3 Roos (2 Splash, 1 Black) and 6 Pullets (3 Blues, 3 Blacks)...
Thanks for taking the time... I'll keep you posted as to how it turns out.

Legs are black and outside toe is black, other toes are yellowish. He (?) has feathers running down outside of both legs and outer toes. they are suppose to be from Grisham's line.

I don't know then. Looks like more of a pattern than just a mossy coloring. Is he supposed to be a black copper? Someone else will chime in here, I'm sure.

Village Chicken,

I am certain my whites breed true when bred to each other, no other colors appear. This has been the case for the last seven years the birds have lived with me, and I do not recall seeing any other color in the pen in the ten years they were at Ellie's. I assume they remained white and bred white in the 15+ years her grandkids had them.

My appologies if my use of dominant, single or double mutant has confused anyone, these are terms I am familiar with and make sense in my mind when speaking of what others refer to as"sports" that present from other varieties.

I still ask why someone is wanting to cross their black coppers with a white; I do not think what they want to accomplish will occur from this mating.
